That's a tough ball to catch. You're moving your center of gravity down to catch what *should* be a low throw at the plate and it sails high and wide. I can't fault Joe for that.
Keep in mind that Mauer only got a glove on that because he's so tall. That sails way over the head of most other catchers.

Wow. Talk about dodging a bullet here. Who woulda thought Dozier would be the hero in this inning?

Not blaming Mauer, the error was definitely Plouffsie's, and a horribly erroneous throw from that distance, but since Mauer is very tall and great athlete and got a glove on it, he still could have caught the ball and probably should have. He kinda rushed the catch and took his eye off the ball anticipating a bang bang tag at the plate. Good thing we got out of that black cloud of an inning.

Ok, if span ran that out, should he be standing on second?

First time since last year I've been glad Thome wasn't a Twin - anybody else trying to run that out beats the relay to first.

He may have rushed the catch but Plouffe was about 60 feet away when he airmailed the ball. It's not as if Plouffe was in the dirt when he threw the ball, he was well onto the grass (without watching the replay). That doesn't allow for much of a reaction time to a terrible throw. Considering that Mauer is crouching and setting up for a low throw at the plate, I'm not going to fault him for not catching a ball four feet high and three feet wide of the target.

If you could ask Plouffe he'd say it was a terrible throw. And if you could ask Mauer i bet he'd say he should have caught it.

The play finally popped up for replay so I watched it a few times. Yeah, Mauer could have caught that. It appears that he was looking at the runner in an attempt to still make the tag.
I still don't fault him much for failing to make the play. He wouldn't have been able to make the tag even if he caught it.
It's been a while since Plouffe airmailed a ball, hasn't it?

Plouffe is only accurate with his mid irons. Misses a lot of fairways and greens with his woods and wedges.
