Mauer is a CATCHER. Catching every day will absolutely destroy your body. He has an 8yr contract. Would you rather have him kill his body when we aren't contending and then just be dead weight when we are contending? Or would you rather have him stay healthy so he can produce for his whole contract

Yes, it does bug most of us that capps sucks and he is hurt. But lets remember last year when he was hurt most of the year but sucked it up and played. Mauer will never get credit for that. He is flat out incapable of such manning up! As for your point that higher salary doesnt equal higher output.....are you out of your mind? think AROD doesnt have higher expectations then everyone on the Yankees? When you sign a guy who was coming off of a MVP to 183 million dollar contract, you have very high expectations. If Mauer was in New York they would destroy him for this me first non sense. He would be hated 10 times worse then AROD! People in Minnesota live in a very strange bubble...I just do not understand how Mauer continues to get away with it. Minnesota nice I guess...

so where is your blog about Capps or Pavano for missing time? They just have shoulder/arm issues. Big deal. Shouldn't they be out there being "tough" and doing everything they can to help the team? Keep throwing even if it hurts. How dare they miss a few games to let an injury heal.

What bugs me is the double standards here. People get hurt and miss time, no big deal. Mauer misses a couple games, or gets a scheduled day off and people flip out. Pavano makes 9M a year and he isn't doing jack for the team on the DL. Why not call him out? Capps sucks even when he does play, but he's missing time. At least when Mauer is healthy he's a productive player. And it also blows my mind that people equate a higher salary with higher output from a player. Mauer is the same player as he was when he was making 8M a year. Paying a guy more doesn't make him any better.

Really....there are people out here you are actually not annoyed with his constant and forever (yes, his entire carreer!) missing of games for suspect injuries?.....183 million, my expectations are a gamer....he could not be farther from that!!

Did you even watch the play happen?

feel good about yourself for ripping on a guy for being injured? seriously, you people need to move on from this "soft Mauer" crap. You have no clue how his body feels on any given day, and I guarantee if you were slid into by someone and got hit on an unprotected part of your body you'd be missing time, too.

Somebody please erase this...before Joe reads it and misses 3 months with hurt feelings. Also known as bilateral leg weakness

This is the worst time of the year to look for pitching. Frankly, the Twins already have better options in AAA than anything that is likely to be available on the waiver wire. Or are you proposing the Twins pay big money to Roy Oswalt (probably against his will)?

I don't see the Clete Thomas signing as problematic in and of itself. I think he does have value as a versatile 4th outfielder. The problem is that he is being put in the starting lineup almost everyday, which falls on Gardy not Ryan.

Hard to argue with the point that we were geared to mash......just wonder if that theory will change not that we clearly are no longer that team. Gardy always plays it safe and risking a hit and run or a stolen base I fear may not be his strong suite....but I hope im wrong here!

I completely agree jwestbrook that (if healthy) this lineup would have mashed in the Metrodome... see Mauer, 28 HR in 2009... Morneau, Thome, Kubel, Valencia, they would have scored a ton of runs in the metrodome.

I think the composition of the team the last two years was a reaction (maybe an over-reaction, but I'm not sure) to how offensively challenged the Twins were the couple of years before that. The timing was just bad. I don't think the organization really knew just how "big" Target Field was going to play. They'd seen the new Yankee Stadium become a HR paradise and weren't really sure whether wind patterns would result in a breeze out toward the plaza every game.

Last year, they talked about needing to get faster (thus the trade of Hardy), but didn't really address the problem well at all (corner OFs that were still too slow to cover the gaps, for example). If Span can stay healthy and if/when the team finds room for guys like Revere and Benson (assuming they can find a way to get on base), the speed on the bases should become evident.

I would argue that looking at the last two years (2010 for sure and 2011 opening day), neither of those lineups were built to play small ball, they were built to play gorilla ball and mash. Those lineups would have been amazing in the Dome. The issue arises that Target Field is among the worst in the majors to hit in for left handed hitters and the Twins had a ton of lefties.

I agree that they haven't been playiing small ball and haven't been doing the little things for probably close to 4 years now, but to use the last two years as examples is flawed because those lineups, and Gardy and others have openly stated it to certain degrees, were not built to play small ball, they were built to outscore their opponents, the complete opposite of the early 2000's teams who were more adept at run prevention and scoring just enough to win.

Compare these players when they were both in there prime...not now. Also, has anyone ever questioned how or why Hunter was hurt? Never. Apples and oranges.
  16. whydidnt's Avatar
Further research, in Hunter's last 3 years here he played 405 games, to Mauer's 395 during that same time, an avg. of 3 games more per year despite playing a much physically less demanding position. Yet he's calling Mauer out about not playing hurt and everyone takes his word as gospel. Just sayin'.

I think fans/media are far too tough on Mauer in regards to his health. Over the last 5 years (including last years debacle) he has averaged 122/games per year. I don't know where to go to find the number for other catchers, but I'm willing to venture that this is on the high side of games played by catchers. Catcher is the most physically demanding position in baseball, and catchers are going to need games off. I can certainly see the argument that because of this the Twins shouldn't have agreed to pay Mauer like they did, but because of the new stadium they were in a bad place. Pay the hometown hero, or let him go, right at the time a new taxpayer subsidized stadium is opening. Mauer's biggest problem isn't the injuries, it's that he doesn't talk about what is wrong, and he fails to realize that because of his salary he's held to a different standard than a guy like Luke Hughes, who nobody cares about when they are hurt. He needs to be more open and upfront with the fans when there is something wrong. I think that if you look back of Hunter's last couple years here, he probably missed almost as much time as Mauer, yet because he's an open book with fans and the media, everybody believed he was really hurt and didn't have issue with it.

I was wondering. I noticed I hadn't seen him around Target Field. I did see him at Twins Fest with the helmet.
  19. righty8383's Avatar
I heard he had a dispute with the Twins at the end of the '09 season regarding some stuff that was stolen from him. I also heard he didn't like the seats that were reserved for him at Target field so he did not renew in 2010. Thats just what I heard...

To Jim, It wasnt the prime exampe it was a simple example. If you wants sheets of players that the twins have got simply becasue of the price, let me know becasue it wont be hard to compile!
