  1. Alex Swim Swinging a Hot Bat for the Kernels

The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped an ugly 5-2 game to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers back on July 9 and Kernels manager Jake Mauer clearly was not a happy man afterward.

His line up had left eight runners stranded in scoring position on the night and played some shoddy defense in a loss on a night when Kernels pitching combined to strike out 13 opposing hitters.

“We’re going to have some changes,” Mauer promised that night, in a post-game interview.

    (This ...

  3. Twins Minor League Report (7/21): Garver Blasts Kernels to Win

www.milb.comSo here's the deal: I spent the last 90 minutes typing up the minor league report only to have the whole thing vanish when trying to add the picture you see over there. If it was 10:30... fine, I could handle that. But it's not. It's 1:15 am and I just got worked over by my wife TWICE playing Ticket to Ride. Well, not just worked over. Worked over about three hours ago before I started to write my original piece.

So instead of getting the full version, you're ...
  4. Some DSL Prospects to Watch

I am working through the minor league system team by team and providing six to ten players to watch for the remainder of the season. I will start here at the bottom in the Dominican Summer League and work all the way through Rochester. This provides a nice mix of known and unknown players to pay attention to for the rest of the dismal 2014 Twins season.

    My DSL players to watch:

    1. Lewin Diaz, 1B, LH, DOB: 11/19/96

    2014 statistics: 92 plate appearances, .272/.359/.457 ...

Size: 41.4 KBAs July comes to a close, the inevitable discussion (at least in Twins Territory) turns to what assets the team could/should part with. This season, as the team slowly but surely heads to a 4th straight 90-loss campaign, names like Kurt Suzuki, Kendrys Morales, Josh Willingham, Kevin Correia and even Brian Dozier have surfaced. But there's another player -- a guy that not as many are discussing, but who has more

  7. Twins Minor League Report (7/20): Quality Starting

The Tampa Bay Rays finished off a three game sweep of the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon with a 5-3 victory in the heat at Target Field. Kevin Correia wasn’t able to continue his recent run of solid pitching, as he lasted just four innings and gave up runs in each of the first three.

In the minors, the starting pitching was the story of the day, but in a good way as all four full-season affiliate starters pitched into the sixth inning. Read on to find out what happened in ...

  9. Who's Quivering Now

Actions speak louder than words. That phrase was shown heavily at the end of the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels game. The game got interesting from the bottom of the eighth to the end of the game. The bottom of the eighth got started with a single from Efren Navarro and with a person on first and one out closer Fernando Rodney came in. Rodney pitched out of the jam and after the last out in the eighth he proceeded to do his tradition. Fernando Rodney has a tradition that after every game ...
  10. Buxton Out for Second Straight Game

Byron Buxton has been on fire these past few days and was looking forward to staying hot this weekend against Daytona and Brevard County. Sadly, he hasn't touched the field. Buxton was 9 for 15 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday night, but Saturday and Sunday he hasn't seen the field. The reason why he's been out is because of Friday night when Buxton was hit by a pitch on his injured wrist. The Fort Myers Miracle are holding him out for a couple games to give him some rest and to ice that wrist ...
  11. Buxton Goes 4 for 6 and Stays Hot

Byron Buxton has been riding a hot streak at the plate since Wednesday. He went 3 for 4 on Wednesday night, 2 for 5 on Thursday night, and 4 for 6 on Friday night. Buxton just came off the disabled list from a wrist injury and has been looking good ever since. Last night he hit another home run against Daytona. This is his second straight game where he has hit a home run. Last night, Buxton had three singles, a home run, two walks, two RBI's, and three runs. It was a great performance from Byron ...
  12. Does Mauers refusal to catch void contract?

Clearly Joe Mauer is not worth his contract as a non-catcher. I am sure when he signed that humongous contract, the Twins signed him as a catcher.

I have clamored for years for Joe to play another position, i was wrong.

He is worth way less as a position player.

Now the question, is the contract valid when he refused to play the position he was signed for? If not, I am way willing to see Joe finish his playing days elsewhere.
  13. Facing the music: The debacle of Kyle Gibson

If Sam Deduno was given half the chance, that Kyle Gibson has, he would be substantially better. Gibson once again lays an egg....two more of these and something will have to be done with him.

Yes at times Gibson has been brilliant....but he can not continue to lay eggs like he did last night...the rest of the season depends on how Gibson pitches, is he hurt?
  14. 7/18 Around the Bases: Santana, Fuld, Dozier, Plouffe

Even though the Twins had a rough game losing 6 to 2 to the Rays I still found a few things to highlight in my Around the Bases.

Single: My Single moment goes to Danny Santana for his returning game. Santana has been sidelined for a while due to a bone bruise on his left knee. The All Star game allowed him a few more days to get rested and tonight was his first game back on the team. Santana went 1 for 4 with a single and a strikeout. Not impressive, but at least he's back and healthy ...
