  1. Twins Daily Spring Training: Advance Scouting

So the Twins Daily official Spring Training coverage begins next week when John Bonnes touches down in Fort Myers, however, last week I had the privilege -- neigh -- honor of getting a tour of Hammond Stadium’s updates with my family.

While in Florida for my -- ahem -- nuptials (sorry ladies), we made a pit stop at the Twins’ spring training facilities and were treated to a walkthrough of the activity, which included the catchers’ drills on the backfield. Thanks to our photographer ...

ID:	6591Although he was signed to a non-guaranteed minor-league deal, the Twins appear to have big plans for Jason Kubel.

"We brought him over here for a reason," said Ron Gardenhire recently.

That reason is to add a powerful veteran bat to a lineup that ranked 11th in the AL in OPS and 12th in runs scored last year. Kubel has a lengthy track record of slugging success, with six straight seasons of above-average production leading up to 2013, and ...

  3. The Bench Is The Biggest Question Mark Heading Into Spring Training

In looking at the Twins roster picture, the bench seems to be the biggest question mark. Who makes the 25 man roster coming out of spring training on the bench will be based upon several scenarios.

Recently, my dad and I did a half hour show where we discuss the roster at length. If you missed it, you can listen to it at the following ...
  4. Random thoughts from the Twins' intrasquad game today

Today the Minnesota Twins unofficially had their first game of the Spring Training, which was an intrasquad contest. Here are some of my thoughts from what happened in this game:

    • Pitchers seem to be well ahead of hitters:
      • Phil Hughes pitched 2 scoreless innings throwing 21 out of 27 strikes, striking out 4 (including Buxton and Sano) and his FB was 91/92 mph
      • Kevin Correia also pitched 2 run-free

  5. Should the Twins trade for Didi Gregorius?

The Arizona Diamondbacks will be dealing with a problem this spring that many other organizations would love to have to deal with. There are two shortstops on their roster who look to be ready to be everyday players at the big league level. Incumbent Didi Gregorius will be battling with top prospect Chris Owings for the starting spot over the next few weeks.

Owings, a 21-year, won the Pacific Coast League MVP last season by hitting .330/.359/.482 with 51 extra-base hits. He is-clearly ...

ID:	6580When the Twins signed Kurt Suzuki back in December, it looked like they were adding a veteran backup catcher to the roster. After all, Suzuki has hit like a backup over the past four years (.650 OPS), served as a backup with two different clubs last season, and is getting paid like a backup at $2.75 million.

However, folks around camp are talking about the new addition as essentially a lock to open the season as Minnesota's starter behind the plate. ...

ID:	6572The Twins need to make some decisions about the back end of their bullpen. And those decisions might not be based on merit. To understand why, we need to talk about “options.” And my favorite way to talk about technical baseball transactions is to compare them to my marriage. Even if it means blatantly plagiarizing my own story. So let’s talk about…

  10. Minor Leaguers Deserve Better

I haven't written much lately. Honestly, I haven't even read much lately. Not about baseball, anyway. There just isn't much going on that I'm particularly interested in. Sure, spring training has started, but they haven't even started playing spring training games, yet, so there just isn't much going on to capture my interest.

I'm pretty sure I'll get more interested when the Grapefruit League games get underway. I guarantee I'll be more than casually interested a month from now when ...

  12. Keep the Ball In The Park

Phil Hughes might have had plenty of people betting MLB World Series in a real spin last year as he gave away plenty of home runs in the less than pitcher friendly environment in New York.

This year it may well be that in Minnesota he’s in a more laid-back atmosphere and more importantly in a far more pitcher friendly stadium. After seven seasons with the Yankees, Hughes signed a $24 million, three-year contract to make Target Field his new home.

    Hughes was originally ...

ID:	6566In Josh Willingham, Oswaldo Arcia and Jason Kubel, the Twins have three players who are projected to be on the 25-man roster and are all probably best suited for designated hitter duty.

Each is likely to see some time in that role, but determining which player should be the true "designated DH" is essentially a matter of judging who provides the least defensive value.

Of course, the go-to designated hitter also has to hit enough to justify playing ...
