  1. What does Liam Hendriks need to do to succeed?

Liam Hendriks delivering a pitch in SeptemberLiam Hendriks could very well be one of the five starting pitchers the Minnesota Twins take north when camp breaks at the end of the month.

He has the minor league numbers to show that he capable of retiring batters. He just needs to do the same against major league hitters. One area he needs to improve on in 2013 is achieving better result when he releases a slider from his fingertips.

Coming off the season he had last year, no one would blame ...
  2. Joe Mauer - Team USA

Nothing real special here...just some footage of Mauer from my seat at the Team USA vs. ChiSox exhibition game on March 5, 2013.

He went 0-3 in the game: GIDP, K, F8

The Twins have multiple pitchers in camp recovering from different surgeries in the last year. Scott Diamond and Vance Worley had bone chips removed from their throwing elbow. Mike Pelfrey and Kyle Gibson are recovering from Tommy John surgery. Another interesting name in camp is Rich Harden and he is trying to overcome some shoulder problems that have haunted him in the past.

Harden is attempting to make his way back to the big leagues after missing ...
  4. Over and Under: Evaluating The White Sox

So, you think you know what's going to happen in the AL Central? Let's find out.

Every year Vegas takes bets on how teams will do over a full year. This represents an unbelievable opportunity for someone who iss super confident in their baseball statistics, because it eliminates the "sample size" excuse.

So have at it. We'll start on the south side of Chicago.

The White Sox won 85 games last year, finishing second in the AL Central. However, their expected ...
  5. It's Going to be Rough...

I know you love the Twins brother, it's just...--My little brother, January 2013.

For her birthday, I took Stinky, aka Mrs. Peanut, aka the co-founder of this blog, aka my wife, to Chicago to see her sister and a whole pile of friends. We had a great time, trying great restaurants, escaping "bro-bars" and celebrating the fact that she has continued to cheat death for another year.
My wife's sister lives about a mile down the road from Wrigley Field, and even an ...
  6. A Snowy Vision of the 2013 Twins.

While I was moping behind my snowblower, I noticed an unusual formation of snow. I turned off the machine and stepped closer to it.

The identify of those piles of snow became clear. You've seen them before, too. They're the smiling, handshaking baseball players whose image lights up when Twins players hit home runs. The players looked at me as if they were waiting for me to speak.

"Who will these 2013 Twins be?" I asked. "Who can I cheer for? Who can I believe ...

Some of the most intriguing spring training battles for the Twins are the race for the starting center fielder job and for the last spot in the rotation. Two of the best prospects for the Twins are in the middle of these battles and they both have been putting together decent starts to the spring. Even if the rest of the spring goes great for Aaron Hicks and Kyle Gibson, they both might be destined to start the year in Rochester.

There are a few different ...
  8. Spring Organizational Depth Chart: The Outfielders

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins minor leaguers all need to report to the Twins minor league complex in Ft. Myers. Soon after, the players will have their first full-squad workouts. In between, the players will have to run a mile, and the pitchers will also need to do a shuttle run. After a few days of workouts, the players will start playing some intra-squad games. Eventually they’ll start getting into some games against other teams, and then in early April, most of the players will be put on a ...

  9. Final Preparations for Spring Training

With minor leaguers officially reporting for camp tomorrow, we are doing our final preparations for the year. I wrote an article on Baseball America a few weeks ago that outlined a typical minor league offseason. This includes lifting activities slowing down and baseball specific activities ramping up. We are trying to best prepare our bodies for the rigors of the season.

A couple of weeks ago we began taking live batting practice off of pitchers. Last year I was unable to do this until ...

  10. The Name Game

Everybody has a name. Some people hate their name. Some people like their name. Most people think their name is irrelevant to their future success. This is a lie. Your name matters. Especially in sports.

In early spring when birds are chirping, grass is greening, and clichés are appearing as far as the internet can see, another phenomenon is taking place: prospect lists are popping up like the carcasses of northbound migratory birds that were sucked into the jet engines of airplanes ...

Rumors have been swirling about the possibility of the return of Jim Thome to the Minnesota Twins. There are plenty of different things floating out there so let's try and organize some of these thoughts. Here is some of the information that is known to the public.

Thome, the 42-year old slugger, is still unemployed and he wants to find a team to play for in 2013. Over the past couple seasons, Thome has been looking to play for a contender so he could ...
  13. Building a Bench

While center field is still in flux, it is fairly clear at this point how the Twins envision their starting lineup coming together at the start of the season. Chris Parmelee will be taking over for Ben Revere in right, and Ron Gardenhire has made no secret of the fact that he'd like to see Brian Dozier and Pedro Florimon take the reigns in the middle infield. All other positions will be occupied by players reprising their roles from 2012.

There is less certainty when it comes to the ...
