  1. Twins Minor League Hitters of the Month - July

After looking at the top starting pitchers in the Minnesota Twins system in July, today we turn our attention to the hitters (and tomorrow, we’ll discuss the top relievers for the month).

Chris Colabello won this ‘award’ the last two months. He’s now with the Twins, so there is actually quite a bit of competition for this award for the first time in a couple of months. A couple of top prospects are near the top of the list.

July is always an interesting month for these ...

  2. Twins Minor League Report (8/1): Rock Cats Power Bats

On Thursday, the Twins organization made the catcher shuffle. Josmil Pinto was promoted to Rochester with Kyle Knudson moving up to New Britain and Jairo Rodriguez moving back up to Ft. Myers. We also learned that Wilkin Ramirez will continue his rehab in New Britain while Darin Mastroianni will stay in Ft. Myers and play some games with the Miracle.

Here more about that and other minor league topics on last night’s Twins Minor League Weekly. Travis was joined by Jim Crikket and they ...

Justin Morneau recently passed Bob Allison for fourth all-time in Twins' career home runs. Of course, he's still behind Allison in franchise history, but whatever. Morneau has 212 home runs and counting. Who will be the next Twins' player to pass Morneau on the all-time home run list?

  4. Nothing Will Keep Us Together - Twins versus Royals (Games 102-104)

The Way the Ball Bounces (Twins 2 Royals 7 – Game 102)

With the trade talk making the Minnesota Twins look like the garage sale everybody drives past, baseball kept being baseball. The game sounded great in my car, with the window down, and a few hints of fall in the breeze.

Provus described a routine foul ball and it reminded me how elegant but complicated the game is. The ball goes in the air, affected by the way it was thrown, the way it was hit, and the atmospheric ...

ID:	5058Scott Diamond was going to be the carryover success from a 2012 rotation that completely imploded around him. Aaron Hicks was going to be the rookie phenom who served as a signal of the bright future ahead. The Twins, configured with a mixture of productive vets and talented youngsters, were going to be an improved club that alleviated the doubts formed by two straight years of utterly awful performance.

    The best laid plans…

  8. Target Field has been kind to Sam Deduno

Entrenched in the middle of another losing season, it can be tough to look at the Twins roster and find some positives. There are going to be disappointments but sometimes there can be good mixed in with all of the bad.

    Sam Deduno fits this mold.

He was a surprise for the 2012 Twins team and this still didn't save his spot on the 40-man roster in the offseason. Every MLB team had a chance to claim him and no one took the opportunity to add him to their club. Deduno ...

The Twins just managed to avoid the shutout Wednesday afternoon, dealing catcher Drew Butera to the Dodgers for a PTBNL just before the 4:00 p.m. ET non-waiver trade deadline passed.

Drafted by the Mets in 2005, Butera has spent the past six years in the Twins organization. He has been up and down with the club over the past four seasons, having played in only 186 major league games in that span (and just two this season). Butera’s value is ...

  10. Twins Minor League Start Pitcher of the Month - July

The Trade Deadline has come and passed which means just one thing, it’s time to start announcing our Minnesota Twins Minor League Awards. Today, we’ll start with the Starting Pitchers for the month of July.

This month the numbers of the five players ranked are better than they were in June. Consider, Miracle righty Tyler Duffey went 3-0 with a 3.26 ERA and opponents batted just .202 off of him and he isn’t in the top 5. Matt Tomshaw made two starts and three long-relief appearances ...

  11. Twins Minor League Report (7/29): The Albers Show Continues

The July trade deadline has passed and the only player transaction on the day was the Rochester’s Drew Butera was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, I think we can expect that there will be a trickle-down effect of that move as Rochester will need another catcher (Josmil Pinto maybe?), and then New Britain will need another catcher (Kyle Knudson’s return, or Matt Koch maybe?). Then Ft. Myers will need a new catcher, so could Jairo Rodriguez’s affiliate tour take him back to the Miracle? ...

  12. Revisiting Catching and Defense

My last blog topic on catcher defense was last November. The trade of Butera has prompted a revisit.

Through July 26 while Ryan Doumit was catching, 46 out of zone balls were called strikes and 205 in zone strikes were called balls. They convert it to a ratio which for Doumit would be 0.22 extra strikes/lost strikes. That ratio is the worst in baseball and the next for a current catcher is twice the ratio at 0.44. The data is from Baseball Prospectus.

    How much difference ...

  13. Drew Butera Traded to the Dodgers

Several minutes after the 3:00 central time trade deadline, reports trickled in that the Minnesota Twins had traded catcher Drew Butera to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The reports indicate that the Twins will receive the ever-popular Player to be Named Later.

As of right now, that will mean that the Twins have opened up a spot on their 40 man roster. The Twins were unable to complete any other trades before the July 31 deadline passed. I have a feeling that the Twins will ...
