  1. Thoughts on 10 Position Players

Unless the Twins make a waiver claim, their roster is set for the start of the 2014 season. Several players have been hot topics here on Twins Daily. I will offer my takes on 10 players and hope that they stimulate some conversation.

    1) Joe Mauer--Now the Twins regular first baseman and unquestioned best player. Mauer is the biggest certainty on the team. He will hit and he won't say anything controversial. Joe still needs to learn a little about first base, he has struggled ...
  2. My First Projection of the 2014 Twins

The Twins will finish their third straight losing season late this month. In a year where I expected they would not contend, they haven't but more to the point they have had precious few players step up and establish themselves. All true-blue Twins fans know that there is impressive talent on it's way to Minnesota, especially among the position players. What was needed this year was to have some of the current roster establish itself for the second half of the decade. With the exception of second ...
  3. Willingham claimed by unknown team

According to Phil Miller of the Star Tribune Josh Willingham has been claimed by an unknown team through waivers. The Twins now have until Friday to either trade him and his $7 million salary or pull him back and keep him for the rest of the year.

Knowing that Willingham is now back healthy and starting to pick up the pace offensively it would be a smart move for many contending teams to take a bid at the 34 year old left fielder. With waivers it would start with the American ...

  4. TwinsFest 2013 - Sunday Jan 27

TwinsFest - which I first experienced when the Twins were riding high on World Series victories, was a fun event to walk through and soak up the baseball atmosphere. It comes at the perfect time of year - Baseball has been done for a few months, and wont be back for a few months, Spring Training and Hot Stove coming up and in full effect. Wonderful. Lets start thinking baseball.

A fun autograph opportunity for me has been to bring Seth Stohs's Twins Prospect Book. It is a lot of fun ...
  5. Terry Ryan priorities.

by , 12-02-2012 at 09:39 PM ("And we'll see ya' ... tomorrow night.")
I was eating lunch yesterday, my good friend sends me a text saying, " There is a Yankee fan at my poker table blabbing that the Yanks are trying hard to trade for Mauer. Any word on the Twins side?" (me) "small word on sox, but not yanks, I would love for the yanks to take that $23 million off the books, and get a few players" (buddy) I would think dumping that contract would be priority. If you get useful players as well, its all gravy. (me) I looked at all available for ...
  6. Handing Out Hardware

This afternoon, we kick off the new playoff format, featuring the 2 Wild Card play in games. But, before we do that. We are going to hand out some hardware for the regular season. We will cover Twins awards and MLB awards.

    Twins Awards

Twins MVP-Josh Willingham: This came down to Hammer and Mauer. But ultimately, we gave the nod to Willingham. Willingham was signed last offseason over the incumbent OF and team leader, Michael Cuddyer, and he did not disappoint

  7. Year in Review: Twins Hitters WPA

Oddly, a lot of sabrmetric geeks I know dont like the Win Probability Added (WPA) statistic. I dont want to speak for them as to why, but the comment I hear that drives me the craziest is something like All you have to do is see that Erik Komatsu was more valuable then Ben Revere to understand that it is worthless.

It drive me crazy because 15 years ago, I would hear the same question from baseball traditionalists when Id suggest that an on-base machine like Bobby Abreu was more ...

  8. The Hammer Has Landed

Size: 28.9 KBAfter missing a couple games due to the birth of his child, Josh Willingham returned to the Twins lineup on Sunday and immediately made his presence felt, delivering a two-run triple in his first at-bat to set the tone in a 7-4 Twins victory.

Willingham finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and a single in addition to the three-bagger, raising his OPS to an eye-popping 1.163.

The left fielder has hit safely in 17 of 19 games as a Twin while ...

  9. 2-4 With wins comes hope.

by , 04-13-2012 at 03:31 PM ("And we'll see ya' ... tomorrow night.")
Man what a difference two games can make!!! Difference in one thing, and about 1 thing only, that is hitting. 20 hits, Morneau/Mauer hit a homerun in the same game, not to mention Willingham continues banging the ball over the fence. Baseball is fun!! Minnesota Twins couldn't hit the ball in the first 3 games, they couldn't play defense, they couldn't pitch, nothing was right, they start the season 0-4. One thing has gotten better, hitting. We all knew based on numbers that was going to be ...

  10. Put Willingham at cleanup

Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire needs to put Josh Willingham at clean-up.

    This would:

Put Willingham between Mauer and Morneau.

That would protect Willingham better, as he is the hottest Twin right now.

It would separate the team's two best left-handed batters with a strong right-handed batter.

It would make it harder for opposing teams later in a game to bring in one pitcher to face Mauer and Moneau, and another to face Willingham. ...
  11. The Buddy Files Vol. 1---How can this turn around?

Here's my first shot at this. I'm assuming no one will see it, but if you do, Thanks....and sorry. I was going to post something earlier with predictions and such but then remembered I hate predictions and such. So I decided to give it a few games before I chimed in.

I have to go at this from the only perspective I have, from the view of a fan 4 hours away. So far its pretty simple: This is bad. It hurts to watch on TV. I half expect Bert to jump from the booth to his werciful demise. ...
  12. Stuff I Didn't Know About Josh Willingham

    Hes Kind Of A Catcher

As a 23-year-old, after a couple of years in the Marlins organization, Willingham began playing catcher. Over the next few years he spent most of his time in the minors behind the plate, playing 60 of 66 games there in AAA. In fact, his first promotion to the majors happened because an ex-Twins catcher was experiencing back stiffness. It was Mike Redmond.

But catching didnt last. The plan going into 2006 was for Willingham to get extensive ...
