  1. Saturday in the (Minor League) Park(s) - 4/14/12

    by , 04-14-2012 at 10:02 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
The Twins lost for the second straight game to the Texas Rangers on Saturday. The story of the game was all of the runners stranded on bases, but it was a day full of stories for the Twins. The Yu Darvish Show made its first appearance at Target Field, and the right-hander from Japan didn’t disappoint. He showed all seven of his pitches and did a nice job of working out of some tough situations. Just before the game started, it came out that the Twins had claimed Clete Thomas, an outfielder ...
  2. Manship, Benson Optioned; More Roster Moves

    by , 03-27-2012 at 07:45 AM (SethSpeaks.net)
On Monday, the Twins reassigned RHP Brendan Wise to minor league camp. Tuesday morning, the Twins optioned OF Joe Benson and RHP Jeff Manship. They also reassigned INF Pedro Florimon and C Rene Rivera.

None of the moves are completely surprising, and yet it further cements some of the roster spots that remain up for grabs.

Benson had a terrific showing in big league camp. His defense shone as he made it clear that he is the organization's top all-around defensive centerfielder. ...
  3. Home Runs Lead to Twins Win Over Yankees

    by , 03-11-2012 at 02:47 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
After struggling during the first week of spring training with the bat, the Twins go three home runs on Sunday afternoon to top the New York Yankees 5-1. Joe Benson got the Twins on the board with a long, solo home run in the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Danny Valencia gave the Twins a 2-1 lead with his second home run in as many days. In the bottom of the 8th, Michael Hollimon hit a long, 3-run homer into the wind that gave the Twins the 5-1 lead. (Hollimon is now 4-6 on the spring with ...
  4. Twins Upper Level Talent

    by , 03-07-2012 at 11:29 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
How many times this offseason have you heard the phrase, “The Twins have some really good prospects but they don’t have any in the upper levels of their farm system?” I hear it all the time, and frankly, it kind of hits a nerve with me.

In 2011, the Twins had a season in which pretty much everyone got hurt and missed significant time. That meant more playing time for Luke Hughes and Trevor Plouffe and Ben Revere which may prove valuable as early as 2012. Those guys were rushed. Ben ...
  5. Position Battles: The Hitters

    by , 02-28-2012 at 12:52 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
Here we are, less than a week into full Twins spring training workouts. Games don’t even start for a couple of days. It’s time to start talking position battles, right? It appears to me that there are actually very few positions that are up for grabs at this stage of camp. Of course, as injuries mount through spring training, more position battles can spring up, but for now, there are a lot of givens on the roster.

Hitters: Joe Mauer, Ryan Doumit, Justin Morneau, Alexi Casilla, Danny ...
  6. Organizational Depth Chart: The Outfielders

    by , 01-31-2012 at 11:55 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
At this point, we have reviewed the infielders and catchers throughout the Twins organization. Today, we will jump to the outfield. This information, of course, could be completely altered by an unexpected free agent signing or a trade. This exercise is not so much an attempt to perfectly predict where all of these players will wind up. In reality, there will be changes. Several players will be released. Some will be placed a level higher (or lower) than I would guess. This is just giving readers ...
