  1. Rock Versus Hard Place

    by , 12-04-2012 at 07:00 AM (TwinsGeek.com)
One of the more interesting times in every offseason is when the rhetoric goes away and the choices become, often painfully, clear. Rock, meet Hard Place.

The Hard Place is where the Twins are: fronting a rotation with Scott Diamond next year. Diamond, by Twins general manager Terry Ryan’s own analysis, is a #3 starter. He’s clearly scouring the winter meetings for upgrades. But like Charlie Brown at Halloween, all he’s getting is a whole lot of Rock.

    Here are the available ...
  2. Twins Week in the Winter Leagues (Nov. 26 - Dec. 2)

    by , 12-03-2012 at 07:47 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
As the Winter Meetings in Nashville’s Opryland are now going full tilt, it’s time to take or weekly look at what is going on in the Winter Leagues. Dozens of Twins players are spending time getting extra at bats or innings pitched. Although there were a couple of players that had poor weeks, there were a few players who had tremendous weeks. At Twins Daily, we will take a look at all of them.

Here’s how players from the Twins system did during the week from November 26 through December ...

Now I can breathe a sign of relief.

At the beginning of last week, the ballot for the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame was released. This year's ballot includes 18 former players including players from five decades of Twins baseball. Since the original class of six was selected in 2000, the Twins have regularly inducted one to two former players or other important people in the club's history. Last season, former pitcher Camilo Pascual was inducted and this followed pitcher Jim Perry and shortstop Greg ...
  5. In Terry I Trust

    by , 12-02-2012 at 10:52 PM (Nick's Twins Blog)
If you were surprised in any way by return in the Denard Span trade, you shouldn't have been. Terry Ryan told us this was coming four months ago.

Back in July, with the trade deadline approaching, Ryan spoke about his approach:

As desperate as the Twins are to find starting pitching for 2013, a Liriano or Denard Span trade might not even address that specific need. Speaking only generally Thursday, GM Terry Ryan said, "When you're out there looking around, I think it's

  6. Terry Ryan priorities.

I was eating lunch yesterday, my good friend sends me a text saying, " There is a Yankee fan at my poker table blabbing that the Yanks are trying hard to trade for Mauer. Any word on the Twins side?" (me) "small word on sox, but not yanks, I would love for the yanks to take that $23 million off the books, and get a few players" (buddy) I would think dumping that contract would be priority. If you get useful players as well, its all gravy. (me) I looked at all available for ...

but not at all rock and roll...that's our prediction for what the Twins will do during this week's Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee.

Every offseason, when there is precious little else to write about, I make prognostications/recommendations for what will/should happen when the Twins' brass heads down to whatever exotic locale has agreed to host the most powerful people in baseball for four days.

This year, there's a lot that could be done to improve ...
  8. Winter Meetings: Time For Terry Ryan to Step Up.

    by , 12-02-2012 at 09:01 PM (Knuckleballs - JC)
This article was originally posted at Knuckleballsblog.com.

Baseball’s Winter Meetings get in to gear down at the Gaylord Opryland hotel in Nashville on Monday and that’s got me a bit nervous. The Twins, at least at the Major League level, are in a sorry state, having come off a 96-loss season which followed a 99-loss season. It just doesn’t get much worse than this, folks.

  9. Does Jim Bowden even watch baseball anymore?

    by , 12-02-2012 at 07:51 PM
Jim Bowden is at it again.

In today's article, he writes about trade candidates for all 30 teams. For the Twins, he lists Justin Morneau. Even though the Twins have said they aren't trading him, and Willingham may be a more likely target. That being said, I can at least swallow that one. The rest of the article is the usual lazy work that he passes off.

Among the 30 players listed are pitchers:
    Brian Matusz
    Luke Hochevar
    Jeremy Hellickson

  10. Examination Time.

    by , 12-02-2012 at 11:14 AM
The front office surprised Twins fans earlier this week by trading outfielder Denard Span to the Washington Nationals for pitching prospect Alex Meyer. Span is an excellent leadoff hitter, solid player on both sides of the diamond, and has a dirt cheap contract for another two seasons. He also has a $9 million team option for 2015. Most people expected the Twins to trade Span for an experienced pitcher or at the very least a major league ready one. Meyer looks like a very intriguing prospect. ...

Before the Arizona Fall League began, we had our first 10 Questions With posting with RHP Kyle Gibson. I’m hoping to do much more of these, and I have a few in the works. Today, I’m coming back with a 12 Questions With Q&A with a Twins minor league pitcher. Frankly, 10 questions is not enough to get to know some of these guys.

Today’s 12 Questions interview is with LHP David Hurlbut. He was the Twins 28th round pick in 2011 out of Cal State-Fullerton ...

  12. Some Interesting Non-Tenders

    by , 12-01-2012 at 09:25 AM
I wrote this last night at PitchersDuel.blogspot.com, but decided it was relevant here as well. Should the Twins go after any of these guys?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Midnight tonight, the final day of November, is the last chance for teams to tender contracts to eligible players. Eligibility is based on service time and generally includes any players with less than 6 years in the major leagues.

  14. 25 Million left for 3 starting Pitchers

    by , 11-30-2012 at 11:47 PM
After the trading Span the other day we now have 70 million or so in commitments for next year. That should leave around 25 million to sign 3 pitchers. Since the Twins have announed they are unlikely to trade for a pitcher at this point. They can really only look through FA at this point for next season. The Twins have talked to 20 plus pitchers this offseason to guage what it would take to sign them and their interest level in comming to Minnesota. Several more pitchers are now on the market ...
