  1. 2012 Day-by-Day - June 4

    by , 06-04-2012 at 11:06 PM
With all the draft stuff going on, I missed yesterday's getting ready for it. Just doing a recap today, but couple pieces of note.

    - Madison Boer wins his first game for Ft. Myers on Sunday going 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO. Lowered his ERA to 9.39 so you can see how bad of a start he'd been on. With the draft today, important to look back to 2011 and Boer was a 2nd round pick with pretty high ceiling. Hopefully this is a start of a better run, better than his first 6 starts!

  2. Drew Butera: Pitcher

by , 06-04-2012 at 11:02 PM (Nevada Twins Fan)
While looking for something else, I ran across on Yahoo's team roster page that Drew Butera is listed among the pitchers.

So that I won't think I was just imagining things after they correct it, here is a compressed screen shot: Seedlings To Stars Twins Prospect List-drew_pitcher.jpg

  3. Grading In A Void

    by , 06-04-2012 at 10:47 PM (TwinsGeek.com)
Of the drafts the have had the last decade or so, I think it’s safe to say that the two first round picks for which the Twins took the most hear were 2001 and 2007. It might be worth noting just how ridiculous both of those look right now. In 2001, the Twins took Joe Mauer as the #1 pick and were lambasted for being too damn cheap and possibly blinded by a local kid. In 2007, the fiscal-based criticism was similar when they drafted Ben Revere and it was compounded by a perception that the Twins ...

  4. Twins Add Two in Compensation Round

    by , 06-04-2012 at 10:39 PM
As expected, the Twins drafted Georgia OF Byron Buxton second overall (though it came with a little uncertainty after Carlos Correa, not Mark Appel, went first).

Shortly after 9:30 local time, the Twins were back on the clock. Conventional wisdom suggested the Twins were going to take local product Mitch Brown.

Instead, the Twins pegged Puerto Rican P Jose Orlando Berrios. Berrios (who I wrote about a few weeks ago) is the third Puerto Rican to go in the top two rounds ...

  5. Catching up with 2011 Draftees

by , 06-04-2012 at 06:25 PM (Peanuts from Heaven)
Last year we posted our most popular blog post ever...more popular than the blog about Delmon being gone, more popular than the blog about our love, more popular even than that time we published a new JD Salinger short story under our own names.

It was a draft-analysis in 5 words or less--sometimes it was logical, far more often it was totally inane (what else can you do for "Nick Burdi"--other than say it reminds you of "watch the birdie!").

  6. Give me an average starter

    by , 06-04-2012 at 01:22 PM
How many Twins starting pitchers do you have confidence in? For me, the list begins and ends with Scott Diamond. How sad is that?

Check this out: Through Sunday's games, the average AL starter gives his team just under 6 IP/GS with a 4.33 ERA. The Twins have gotten just 5 1/3 IP/GS with a 6.18 ERA. With league average starting pitching, the Twins would have allowed 41 fewer ER in 34.1 more IP. That reduced workload on the bullpen (3.58 ERA) saves another 14 ER, for a total of 55 fewer ...

  7. DRAFT DAY: Twins Myth #3448: Outfield Depth

    by , 06-04-2012 at 10:02 AM (SethSpeaks.net)
Tonight at 6:00 central time, the MLB Draft will commence. We have heard now that the Astros will select Stanford right-hander and Houston native Mark Appel. That means that the Minnesota Twins will have their pick of every other eligible player.

I have freely said that I will not be at all disappointed if the Twins take a college pitcher like Kyle Zimmer or Kevin Gausman, the college catcher Mike Zunino or high school bats like OF Byron Buxton or IF Carlos Correa. In fact, although ...

  9. 2012 Twins MLB Draft Primer

by , 06-04-2012 at 07:48 AM (North Dakota Twins Fan)
Original post from North Dakota Twins Fan
A little after 6 p.m. CT on Monday night, the Minnesota Twins will be making a franchise altering pick when the scouting staff and the front office will decide on the number two pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. On the heels of a disappointing 2011 season, the Twins earned the second pick in the first round based on the fact that the team ...
  10. Second in Line

    by , 06-03-2012 at 11:01 PM (Nick's Twins Blog)
The last time the Twins owned the No. 2 pick in the MLB draft, they selected a college pitcher named Adam Johnson out of Cal State Fullerton. As most fans will recall, he cruised through the minors and made his major-league debut at the age of 21, but hit a wall and quickly fizzled out.

That's a scary memory as the Twins eye a handful of collegiate hurlers with this year's second pick, but fortunately the history of the draft slot has been much brighter since the Johnson bust.

    A couple of notes:

    • I think that my buddy Brian Dozier needs a day or two off to clear his head a little. It seems like he's scuffling a bit, especially with his glove. I think he'll be fine, though.
    • Did you see that sick Ben Revere catch on Saturday? That perfect somersault in

  13. Sunday's Minor League Round-up

    by , 06-03-2012 at 07:28 PM
Last night, word came out that Carl Pavano was going to undergo an MRI and it appears likely that he will end up on the disabled list. All indications are that Jeff Manship will be starting in Pavano’s spot on Wednesday. No word on whether Manship will be rocking a mustache or not.

On Sunday evening, ESPN’s Jim Bowden broke (?) the news that the Astros will indeed be selecting Stanford RHP Mark Appel - confirming what many already believed - with the #1 overall pick tomorrow night. ...
  14. My Mock Draft

    by , 06-03-2012 at 01:31 PM
This is version 1.0 (and most likely the only one).

    My mock draft:
    1. Astros – P Mark Appel, Stanford. It comes down to him or Buxton.
    2. Twins – OF Byron Buxton, Georgia HS. Correa gaining.
    3. Mariners – SS Carlos Correa, Puerto Rico. The Mariners are unpredictable. I think it comes down to Correa or Buxton
    4. Orioles – P Kevin Gausman, LSU. Bundy and Gausman could form a lethal combination.
    5. Royals – P Kyle Zimmer, San Francisco. Will they pass ...
