  1. Halfway Roster Projections: Has Yours Changed?

    by , 03-13-2013 at 07:00 PM
Most baseball fan’s favorite part of spring training is projecting your teams opening day roster. With new free agent acquisitions and minor leaguers with dreams of making it to the show, both players and fans are excited to get things going. Halfway through spring training do we really know more now than we did 3 weeks ago about projecting the opening day roster?

With more rounds of cuts on the way and the possibility of signing another player, or two, there are a variety of ...

  3. An Early Rochester Red Wings Preview

    Bullpen Criticism-imag0248-1.jpg

The Rochester Red Wings finished the 2012 season with a 72-72 record. I know that doesn't seem impressive, but when you haven’t reached that mark since 2008 and suffered back to back 90 loss seasons in 2010 and ’11, it’s a step in the right direction.

There was a buzz about the ball park Friday. General Manager Dan Mason said that he was “very excited” about the 2013 season, and why shouldn't he be? The team is heading in the right direction, ...

  4. Spring Training Comes to an End, by Tim Shibuya

    by , 03-31-2012 at 08:03 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
This blog was written by Twins minor league pitcher Tim Shibuya. The right-hander was the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year last year, and he will be starting for the Beloit Snappers as the 2012 season begins. Here are his thoughts as spring training comes to an end:

As the end of Spring Training nears, the positives and negatives that you only think about at the start of camp start to become a reality. Friends you have played with for a while might get moved to a higher ...

You may have noticed that every time I talk about attending Spring Training games, I mention that I like to visit with the other fans, especially the retirees. I like the retirees because they always seem so happy. Since the game doesn't matter so much, it's pretty easy to develop a great, interesting conversation.

Such was the case on Thursday the 15th, during that 15-7 debacle against the ...

  7. A Spring Training Report From A Civil War Era Soldier.

    12 March, 2012.

    Ft. Myers, Florida.

I trust this Letter finds you Well and in Good Health and Spirit. Tell Mother I miss her Hot Dish Casserole every Day.

I fear this Baseball Season will be what We feared it would be when this Spring Training Campaign began. It is now mid-March, as you can see, and we are still faced with the same Questions of last Year's horrid and shameful Defeat.

The Artillery was splendid yesterday, on 11 March 2012, ...

If you've never been to Fort Myers for Spring Training, I highly encourage you to go. It's a great family vacation, whether you love baseball, the beach, or both. ...

  9. Are They Still Around?

    by , 02-26-2012 at 08:53 PM
One of my favorite spring training activities is looking to see how former Twins are faring with their new team. Box scores of spring games, especially those of teams you would not normally follow, tend to be pretty boring—lots zeros and ones. So, for me, I like to keep tabs on some “old friends”. In most cases, I really enjoy seeing former Twins players doing well, so I silently cheer them on as I watch for their name in the box scores. I suppose you could go the other way and say to yourself: ...
  10. Zumaya already injures elbow?

    ************************************************** *************

Earlier today, newly acquired relieverJoel Zumaya was throwing batting practice to Twins hitters. Members of the media seemed to be impressed saying he was “throwing quite hard”.

Not long after that a flood of tweets came in saying Zumaya cut the session short and walked off the field with Twins head trainer Rick McWane. Neither Zumaya or the ...
  11. Reasons for Hope

The following post is also available at www.knuckleballsblog.com.

I'm not an idiot (most of the time). I know the Detroit Tigers are consensus favorites to win the AL Central Division title again... probably by double digit games again. I know the Twins are not widely viewed as the most likely team to challenge the Tigers if such a challenger does emerge.

But as I mentioned a few days ago, Spring Training is my Mardi Gras! I'll deal with reality on Opening Day. For now, ...

  12. Gabbin' Grapefruit: Terry Doyle

by , 02-21-2012 at 09:48 AM (Over the Baggy)
La Valle had a good piece on Rule 5 pick Terry Doyle at the Strib today. The 26-year-old right-hander discussed some his route to the Twins organization, listening in on Internet radio at his home in Warwick, Rhode Island when he found out that Minnesota had drafted him.

For their part, the Twins were impressed with Doyle’s performance in the Arizona Fall League in which he went while in the Chicago system and, as Neal writes, “Doyle he was dominant at times while going 4-0 with a ...
  13. Organizational Roster Bubble

    by , 02-20-2012 at 09:42 PM
Last week, I examined some trends the team has exhibited while drafting. This week, I’m going to look at the construction of both the MLB and AAA rosters.

Many people like to “project” what they think the Opening Day roster will look like. I’m no different. However, I’m also going to consider how past rosters have been put together coming out of the spring – at least at the highest two levels – to make an educated guess at what players, ...

  14. Fort Myers Spring Training Guide

    by , 02-20-2012 at 05:15 PM
I posted this a week ago or so in my blog, but I am reposting it here as well in case folks were interested in going down to Fort Myers for Spring Training this spring:

As I promised last Sunday, I have been working on two Spring Training Guides: a General Guide to Fort Myers and a more specific food guide (edit: the Fort Myers Culinary Guide is now up - 2/17/2012). This is the first one and I will cover the area, the town, Hammond Stadium and other places to catch Twins' spring ...
