  • Orioles Claim Alexi Casilla

Alexi Casilla's era with the Minnesota Twins is over.Mark it down somewhere. Friday, November 2nd. It is the end of the Alexi Casilla Era as a Minnesota Twins player.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the athletic infielder who just never quite met his perceived potential has been claimed by the Baltimore Orioles.

Casilla came to the Twins in a December 2005 deal with the Angels in which the Twins send then-talented JC Romero to the west coast. Casilla debuted in September of 2006 and was primarily used as a pinch-runner down the stretch for the Twins. In his 515 career games with the Twins, Casilla hit .250/.305/.334 with 72 doubles, 14 triples and 11 homer runs in 515 games. He also stole 71 based in 80 attempts.
He was given every opportunity to be the Twins starting shortstop and second baseman, but he never took to it. He appeared much more comfortable in a utility role. With the Twins acquiring so many similar middle infield types, letting go of Casilla makes sense as he would likely make nearly $2 million in arbitration.

Best wishes to a class act!

Now if the Twins only got smart and got real middle infielders, and used either Flori or Esky as AAA filler/backups, like they really are.

Best wishes to him. He always busted his tail off and never complained about playing time or anything. A total class act indeed.

By the end of today, I would like to see Baker and Haren in pinstripes. Is that too much to ask? (Rumors the Twins were in it heavily on Ervin Santana, so Haren would be comparable.)

Haren is a Cub so the Twins whiffed again.

Sexy Alexi will thrive in the NL. Best of luck to a class act!

Why do I have the feeling this will be another situation where a player doesn't materalize for the Twins, and goes on to play well for another club...

I know Houston is moving to the AL-- I wasn't aware that Baltimore was moving to the NL

I wanted the Twins to keep Casilla, but dollars and sense made it nearly impossible for Lexi to remain a Twin. If Casilla is the ninth regular, who provides premium speed and defense at second base, it is a fine situation. The Twins surely are not in that place. I always thought there was a breakout possible for Casilla, but it never happened since '08, when his surprise performance helped lift the team to game 163.

Strangely, I'm not at all opposed to this move.

Haren isn't a Cub yet...and I meant Twinstripes, not pinstripes. Come on, Terry Ryan, land him....

I can't say that I wanted to keep Casilla, but I expected the Twins to at least wait until the deadline to decide whether to go to arbitration. At best he provide cheap insurance in case they can't find another infielder this off season. At worst he wasn't going to get much of a raise, and they could cut him before opening day for 20% of that contract if one of the other options makes him expendable And if another team wanted Casilla for his arbitration salary, the Twins aren't likely to get anything better than him for anything cheaper.

One less bad player on the Twins. Too bad he'll be replaced by someone just as worse!

I hope for the best for Casilla. But if he hits .290 or better next year, then I will be hoping that the Twins get a new pitching coach.
