  • Series Preview: Twins @ Tigers, 4/29

The Twins should feel pretty good about themselves right now. Expected to finish last in the division by pretty much everyone, the team is poised to enter May with a winning record for the first time since 2010. After narrowly losing a pair of one-run games to the Rangers late last week, the Twins rallied and took the final two games of the series by a combined score of 12-2.

On the other hand, the Tigers have scuffled a bit early in 2013. Expected to dominate the AL Central, the Tigers have posted just a 12-10 record in the first month of the season and lost the opening week series to the Twins in Target Field.

While the rest of the Twins rotation seems to be turning the corner, tonight's game with Pelfrey on the mound could be telling. Pelfrey has continued to struggle after his return from Tommy John surgery and if he doesn't start showing results, the Twins could be forced to make a move if one or more of Gibson, Deduno, De Vries, or Hendriks looks to move back to the Major Leagues.

Very pleased. Way above expectation, especially since the strike zone for Scherzer seems to be at least an inch lower than for Pelfrey. Parmalee really hit that ball, short-hopped the wall in center. Let's drive him in.

Sweet! Arcia w/ the opposite field double. 3-1.

Hicks just took one of those low, low, low strikes for strike three.

My question is, is how Pelfrey hasn't given up more runs to these guys with the lineup they have.

Maybe Parmelee said something that crossed a line when he struck out, and now anything close down there will be a strike.

The one thing Pelfrey has going for him right now is the speed variation between his fastball and curveball- it's a full 20 mph difference between the two.

Pelfrey's had good movement on his pitches, and seems to be changing speeds pretty well.

Speeds on the last few pitches: 81, 85, 91. And another 1-2-3 inning.

      He's channeling his inner KC.

Seriously, Joe Mauer has been hot-and-cold a lot this year. Currently on a ridiculous slump (for him, anyway) after batting like .400 for a week

That was a beautiful drag bunt by Florimon. Tigers commentator calling it a perfect bunt.

I think Gardy and Ryan are trying to bring back the Piranhas with Escobar, Florimon and Dozier. I certainly like the approach.

Dozier had one of those low pitches called a ball.

Maybe the ump is over whatever hissy fit it was.

This is only the second time in his career he's gone four consecutive games without getting a hit. The other time was back in August of 07 and he still managed four walks.

Loving Coomer's hitting insight tonight - the Twins should add him to Dick and Bert; get the insight from both sides of the pitch, and probably beaucoup yuks.

I have always been a big Coom fan

I was looking forward to Coom's analysis. Bert doesn't know anything about hitting and Coomer does. Smalley is pretty good, too. Laudner is terrible.

Pelf seems to have gotten a little better at wriggling out of trouble.

I like Smalley quite a bit, but Coom's ok.

Tigers get 2 hits, including a triple, but no runs thanks to double play. Pelf is doing well. Think he comes out for the 6th, or does Gardy turn it over to the pen?
