• Twins Trade Jamey Carroll to the Royals

The Minnesota Twins have announced the they have traded infielder Jamey Carroll to the Kansas City Royals. He gives the Royals depth in the middle infielder. The Twins will receive a Player to be Named Later or Cash.

Carroll signed a two-year contract with the Twins in November of 2011. The 39 year old started his stint with the Twins as their shortstop before moving over to second base. This year, he has been a utility infielder and played in a limited basis.

I'm certain it is no coincidence that he has played quite a bit more in recent weeks, particularly at third base. Likely the Twins were trying to increase his value, maybe in an attempt to get an actually Player (to be named later) rather than just Cash.

Trading within the division has become more commonplace for the Twins in recent years. Last year, they traded Francisco Liriano to the White Sox. Two years ago, the Twins traded Delmon Young to the Tigers. Three years ago, the Twins received Carl Pavano from Cleveland.

The Twins have now traded the #1 and #5 players from the list I wrote at the July trade deadline of players most likely to be traded.

This is a good situation for Carroll, a classy veteran who gets a chance to play on a competing team.

I like the move since it frees up a spot for someone else on the 25 and 40 man. Carroll was a classy guy and good leader for the young guys, but we are now all about 2014. I guess Mastroianni needs to be put back on the 40 man. I would like to see us call up one of the young infielders (other than Escobar who we've already seen), but the only other guy on the current 40 man roster would be Santana. Doumit can't be activiated until Thursday, so I guess whoever comes up will be a short time replacement. Who else can play 3B on the current roster? Or will be stuck seeing Ploufee there everyday until September?

      Yes, they are.

The timing of this makes me thin th $ was not the primary motivation, but the Twins saved $1M+ with this move. I'd be more optimistic about the PTBNL if I heard the Twins were picking up part of Carroll's salary.

Next question: how happy is Doug Bernier tonight?

The timing of this also makes me think that Ryan was going to move Carroll one way or the other to make room on the 40 man Nd the Royals gave the best offer. Which makes me pretty dubious about the PTBNL.

To clarify, I was congratulating Ryan for the trade (and also wishing Carroll well) for obtaining said PTBNL and saving money (and by extension, opening a slot on the active roster)--that was a good trade (IMO) and Ryan earned his kudo. Apparently not all agree. Oh well...

Rather than threadjack this or other discussions, I put up a response in my blog. Go there and tear me a new one if you feel so motivated.

It is probably safe to be dubious of the ptbnl. It was Jamey Carroll after all.

I really enjoyed watching Jamey Carroll play. Many clutch hits. Great hustle. Fantastic glove. These are the kind of guys you really appreciate. Total team player. I wish him the best of luck with KC.

It can be a good trade for the Twins (money saving, maybe even getting cash), while still being a bad trade for the fans (better they put in money, and get a lotter ticket of a minor leaguer). It does the fans no good for the team to have more cash, unless the team spends it. So, ya, it can be a good trade for the team, but not helpful to the fans.

I congratulate Ryan for getting anyone to take Carroll, and for getting whatever he can. Good business move, we'll find out later if it was a good move for fans or not.

I had the same reaction when Kubel and Cuddyer left and Willingham and Doumit were signed. They did well for us last year and people were talking about how savvy it was for Ryan to do that since we saved a bunch of money by the switch out. Problem is, that saved money, isn't being put back into the team payroll. As far as I'm concerned, the 'saved money' part of the argument is, therefore, negated. If they aren't going to use the saved money to make the roster better, why do we care the money was saved? Why is it a big deal to us?

I hope Jamey Carroll wins a ring with the Royals. Excellent player, and a great example of professionalism for the younger guys.

People are upset about this how? The Twins got something (hopefully a PTBNL) for a backup infielder. I want the player, but quite frankly won't complain if it's a player or cash.

I don't see anyone upset at all, maybe ThePuck is, not sure. I'm not upset, I'm withholding judgement on how good it is for FANS until we see what happens.

I get it, some people don't care that the Twins are not doing everything they can to turn over every stone to get lucky and find a players. Others would like the Twins to concentrate more on that than on money, but reasonable people can disagree. We can wish they had done something different, without being upset.

Like I've said, great job getting something for a guy they were not using. Whether that something is good for US, we'll just wait and see.

Nope, not upset at all. I like him, hope he and the Royals make the playoffs, but not upset in the least.

IMHO whatever cash or grade C prospect we get for Carroll is a bonus. This was all about getting something to open a roster spot for Mastro--if we didn't trade Carroll or Doumit we would have to DFA somebody (Bernier??). Now Clete and Carroll face off over the remainder of the season for the 4th OF spot in 2014 and 2015.
