• Twins Minor League Report (8/12): Gonsalves Deals in Appy Debut

For those of you that read this regularly - and clamored for Andrew Albers to get his chance - you were probably pretty excited to see him as good as he was tonight for the Twins. Staff Ace? If a guy that doesn't hit 90 and is the definition of "pitching-to-contact" isn't exactly what the Twins are looking for in a Staff Ace, well...

Today was also a big day for current minor leaguers recognized around baseball.

Let's take a spin around the minor leagues.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS 9, NORFOLK TIDES 4 (14 innings)
    Box Score

Rochester scored five runs in the 14th inning to put this game away.

Chris Parmelee only had one hit (a double) but drove in three and walked four times. Jermaine Mitchell was 5-for-7 with a triple and a home run. Eric Fryer and Eduardo Escobar each had four hits.

Logan Darnell pitched five innings (three runs, seven Ks) before turning it over to the bullpen. Edgar Ibarra pitched 1.1 scoreless innings (that's 11.1 scoreless to start his AAA career). A.J. Achter pitched the final three innings and picked up his first AAA win.

Earlier in the day, Pat Dean was named International League Pitcher of the Week.

The Red Wings are currently 3 games up on Buffalo. Wednesday marks the start of a series against Buffalo at 7:05 ET. The starting pitcher is TBD.

NEW BRITAIN ROCKCATS - Day off

Though the team had an off day, there was still RockCat news: Miguel Sano was named Eastern League Hitter of the Week.

The RockCats are currently six games out of the playoffs. DJ Baxendale and BJ Hermsen will start tomorrow's doubleheader. The first game is set to being at 5:05 ET.

FORT MYERS MIRALCE 3, JUPITER HAMMERHEADS 3
    Box Score

Despite out-hitting Jupiter (14-5), the Miracle failed to score when it counted (2-for-9 with RISP) and failed to hold onto a lead when it counted (three 8th inning runs allowed).

Kennys Vargas hit his 18th HR on the year, among three hits. Byron Buxton also had three hits and a stolen base. He was also caught stealing.

Jason Wheeler struck out 10 in seven innings of two-hit ball. Tyler Duffey was responsible for the three unearned runs scoring. Zack Jones couldn't abandon the inherited runners and ended up blowing his 4th save of the season.

Tomorrow's starter at St. Lucie at 6:30 ET is TBD.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 3, KANE COUNTY COUGARS 4
    Box Score

Jorge Polanco had a double and was the only player with a multi-hit game. He also singled.

Max Kepler and Adam Brett Walker were each credited with an RBI.

Josue Montanez struck out three over seven innings. Dallas Gallant pitched a scoreless inning before Madison Boer surrendered two runs in 2/3 of an inning to blow his first save.

The rest of the starting rotation is TBD.

Jose Berrios was named the Pitcher of the Week in the Midwest League.

ELIZABETHTON TWINS 7, DANVILLE BRAVES 4
    Box Score

This was the completion of the game started 7/22.

Josh Burris allowed one run over the final four innings. He struck out four.

Romy Jimenez had a three-run double in today's action.

ELIZABETHTON TWINS 2, DANVILLE BRAVES 1
    Box Score

In today's regularly scheduled game, the E-Twins escaped with a one-run win.

Zach Granite, Stuart Turner and Romy Jimenez all had two hits.

Stephen Gonsalves made his E-town debut tonight and said it best himself:

Luke Bard pitched one inning. He walked a batter, but didn't allow anyone to score.

Hein Robb was named the Pitcher of the Week in the Appy League and will pitch at Danville tomorrow night at 7pm ET.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL ORIOLES 6
    Box Score

Engelb Vielma had two hits and walked three times. Will Hurt also had two hits. Both players stole a base.

Nelson Molina was 1-for-1 after entering the game as a pinch runner and has improved his batting average all the way up to .090.

Amaurys Miner had a double and an error.

Jorge Fernandez hit a home run.

Lewis Thorpe wasn't as sharp as he has been lately. He allowed three runs in four innings - two walks, three runs, three strikeouts.

These two teams will have a re-match tomorrow.

That misses the point of my response, which countered the claim that Slowey had a lack of talent. And misses the greater point that the Twins FO has mishandled players in the recent past who appear to display "attitude."

And..... actually he was more than good enough. He had a great rookie season and was a very effective P-T-C #5 SP for the next 2 years, until assorted injuries, a strange ST demotion in favor of Blackburn and other "philosophical disagreements" (why....he actually reads and quotes from classical books!) with the coaching staff (leading to the club engaging in a character-assassination-whisper campaign that continues to the present day) led to his falling out with the Twins.

I hope nobody tells Gonsalves that the Twins passed on him three times.

Thomas has hit better than Hicks, and he's shown that he can cover some ground in CF. He's not Hicks defensively, but he's solid.

Only thing I care about is doing what's best for Hicks long-term development.
There's essentially nothing different between Hicks and Thomas this year. Neither should be in the big leagues. I'm amazed that it seems to be unrecognized that Thomas sucks incredibly.

Hopefully Albers can keep it going. Obviously he will eventually give up a run, but hopefully he can continue to pitch well. It will be interesting to see how he fares playing a team a second time.

The reason it seems "unrecognized" is that it simply isn't true. Thomas certainly doesn't deserve to be a starting CF and that the Twins should, and will, eventually make an upgrade, but that doesn't mean that he Clete no value. His OBP/SLG/OPS batting slash isn't all that far below the median numbers for a MLB CF. And in just 219 PA, his combined WAR in the field and at the plate is much better than replacement level at 0.5. I would think "incredible suckage" would mean he would require a negative WAR number, not a positive one.

And Hicks is an inaccurate and invalid comparison to Thomas. His career, flashes of excellence and talented tool set suggests he still has significant upside. Thomas is a finished product, a slightly above-replacement-level 4th/5th OFer. Hicks still can become an annual 3.0 WAR CFer.

      Seth and Jeremy:

This may be the wrong thread to post this--but in checking MILB.com for Stephen Gonsalves update--noticed the Kernels put Berrios on the DL--is this a serious injury or just a rest to control innings--like they did to Brett Lee??

I can't imagine anyone in the Twins front office being upset about a guy wanting to prove a lot of people wrong... That's way different than showing people up.

Looking into it, but my assumption is that it's just a way to keep innings down. They do that all the time. They did it with Brett Lee a week or so ago. They've moved Melotakis to the bullpen a couple of times. Earlier in the year, Tomshaw was placed on the DL for 10 days. This is normal.

Don't get me wrong, if it's an injury, then they will completely shut him down, but I don't see any reason to think that.

Slowey has been doing fairly well with the lowly Marlins this season. I think he has more talent than you thought.

Slowey is out for the year with an injury... but he was pitching well. In my opinion, he was a solid #3/4 type of starter until that line drive off the wrist. I think he had some screws put in there or a plate, and it really seemed as thought he struggled after that to get the break on his curveball and his pitches weren't moving as much.

Stephen Gonsalves does appear to have some competitive fire, but I hope he realizes that bragging about your pitching prowess looks a little silly before you've even made it to low A ball....

I think we can cut Gonsalves him some slack here. The Twitter world is filled with lots of much worse and ignorant commentary from many- and even adults who you think would know better are retracting stupid stuff all the time- and they're much older than a young kid 2 months away from graduating out of high school.

I don't understand how anyone can think this is a bad thing. I love the fact Gonsalves has a chip on his shoulder. His tweet wasn't disrespectful to any of the opposing players. Go get um!

True, at least he didn't post a selfie of his shameful parts.

      Yet...
