  • The Art Of Choosing A Walkout Song

All is well in the world. Spring Training is over and teams are in their affiliated cities. The beginning of the season means jersey selection, locker organization, paperwork and…walkout songs. This decision can be spur of the moment or have months of thought put into it. The reasons for choosing a particular song are unique to each guy. There are a few popular ways I have seen players do this in the past.

    Play on Words

Yesterday I was asking a few guys what they would be using for songs. Matt Summers told me he couldn’t think of anything so he went with “Summertime” by Kenny Chesney. This is clever for obvious reasons. A number of closers have used the song “Closing Time” in the past. Mitch Williams used the song “Wild Thing” to go along with his ‘style’ of pitching. I have had a tough time playing on a Scandinavian last name, so this one isn’t for me.

    Funny/Crowd Pleaser

I really enjoy when I hear this style as a walkout. They are especially good if a pitcher uses one (they get a longer section of the song) or if they are played at the perfect point in the song. During batting practice yesterday all of the walkout songs were tested over the loud speaker. Among the popular hits played were a number of Justin Bieber ballads. These songs are usually picked as a joke, but often are a hit with the kids in the crowd. I am excited for the first time “One Less Lonely Girl” is blasted over the speakers at Pohlman Field. In college our 2B picked his song to be a joke, but little kids danced and sang every time “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus filled the Metrodome.

    Good Beat/Lyrics

This is the most popular method and the one that I typically use to pick my songs. It has been used by guys like Derek Jeter (Square Dance-Eminem). His song is cued up to say the words, “It feels so good to be back.” I used this my freshman year of college with “Love Me or Hate Me” by Lil’ Wayne. Last year I knew our home games would be at Target Field. The state of the art sound system contributed to picking “Buzzin” by Mann for its catchy beat.

    What Do You Like?

This year I went with “Paradise” by Coldplay. What walkout songs do you like the best? Do you notice each song when you go to a game?

Does anyone know the name of the song that Brian Dozier used when he was with the Fort Myers Miracle? When I lived in Atlanta, I remember that Bobby Bonila used "Bad to the Bone" and in Chicago Keith Moreland used the theme from the TV show "Dallas". Trevor Hoffman had a great song and show when he came on the field to clsoe a game in San Diego.

My wife has long said that "Pour Some Sugar On Me" will be her at-bat song (another reason I love her), and were I a closer I would have to use "The Final Countdown", I mean...c'mon!

Actually I am kinda old school in that other than when someone enters from the pen (because there is time) a walkout song is not necessary for a hitter who is on the on deck circle to go to the batter's box. A nice loud announcement of his name followed by fan cheering is better. Would be interesting to find out who was the first team that had walkout songs for hitters and the history of the hitter walkout songs. I suspect that it is post ('94) strike

If you're the Closer, whatever music you choose, you should also consider tacking this ditty onto the end of it.

If I had the chance, I'd pick a song that I like. Right now, I think I've settled on the first 1:30 of Dream Theater's "Outcry." Unfortunately, that's a bit long, so I guess I'm destined to be either a starting pitcher or closer, haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi0_kBCvTH0

I was working with an Astros affiliate in KY and we had to come up with scoreboard pictures and walkout songs for opposing hitters. One of the samples I played was this one. (2:09-2:32)
One of our guys liked it, and changed it to his walkout song.

I heard this one in the Northwoods League last summer and loved it: the first 32 second of this.

I really liked the song Rene Tosoni used last year. (I Love My Sex by Benny Benassi) Unfortunately that was usually followed by a Rene Tosoni at-bat.

Operation Sports has a forum for walk-up music mods for the Video Game MLB12: The Show.

There are different threads for different MLB teams. Users note the walk-up songs used by various players.

BTW, AJ, good song and thanks for doing this story. And yes, the walkup music for players is often a topic of discussion between me and my friends (and on Twitter) during games.

Coldplay! I must be getting too old...they do absolutely nothing for me. Just a bunch of Meh!

However, nice post and at least you thought it through.

I'd prefer that everyone stick to Rock/Punk/Alternative.

How about "Know your Enemy" by Rage against the machine...or "Bro-Hymn" by Pennywise

Basically, choose any song played during a MN Wild game...they got the music down.

One of my buddies is adamant that our amateur team all has walk-out music. Last year, one of my mine was the beginning of this (Local and good beat factor): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx8HfEdZVrg

This year, I think I'm going to add the beginning of this to the rotation (starting at about :12 sec in, Funny and play on words factor): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-6uX--o3xQ

I've probably spent an entire evening listening to music to find songs for this the past 3 seasons, it's very important. I want something that amps me up and gets the blood flowing before an at-bat.

If I needed a walkout song I think I would use Give It All by Rise Against
