  • Twins vs Rays, 08-10-2012, 7:10pm

The Twins look to continue their improved play as they go into a weekend series against the Rays at Target Field. Jeremy Hellickson takes the mound for Tampa Bay while Cole De Vries gets the nod for Minnesota. Hellickson is another good young pitcher for the Rays, compiling an ERA of 3.43 this season and De Vries looks to keep churning out solid starts for the Twins in a bid to cement his spot in the rotation for next season.

Tampa Bay has played well recently, taking seven of 10 as they vie for a Wild Card spot in the American League. Will the Twins get to play spoiler to another team or will the Rays' pitching shut down Minnesota bats? Will Tsuyoshi Nishioka continue to get starts at second base? How do you expect this weekend series to shake out? Join the Twins Daily discussion and let us know!

The Rays sideline guy... interviewed Joe Maddon after commercial break.

Q: Why is Zobrist playing 2nd today?

A: Well Moore and Hellickson are fly ball pitchers but the Twins put the ball on the ground more than most teams.

Seems to be working so far

Several pitches were good and on the corners, but yeah, Rays waited for the pitches up and Devries would eventually deliver one right over the heart of the plate and up.

They could be our "Wrigley Field Baskets."

That's exactly what I had in mind but on a much grander scale. I think that's what the overhang in RF is supposed to be already, kinda.

I will say this about the 2012 Twins. I do believe that even being down 8-2 in the 4th, that they could conceivably still win this game.

Couldn't say that about the injury plaqued 2011 club.

Doesn't surprise me - we knew they had some offense (when it clicks). How do they stand in runs given up?

It wouldn't be a Twins game without making an unnecessary out on the bases.

I wonder which is greater - the number of bases that Revere has taken over and above the average player solely on his speed vs. the number of times he's screwed the pooch on the bases?

Didn't Gardenhire do that when he brought in Perdomo? And then removed Mauer and Willingham from the lineup? And then after Mastroianni beat out an infield hit in the 8th, and despite Pena not holding him, no steal was called for?
