Trading established players for prospects is the sign of a rebuilding team, and that is certainly what we've seen from Terry Ryan with his first few major moves this offseason. Many casual fans have expressed outrage over trades that sent Denard Span and Ben Revere – cornerstones in the Minnesota outfield – to the NL East for young pitching geared more toward the big picture than immediate improvement.
The two prizes acquired in these deals, Alex Meyer and Trevor May, both have what it takes to become true assets in the rotation. In all likelihood it won't happen in 2013, which is understandably frustrating for fans who are tired of all the losing and are yearning for short-term gains. ...

The Minnesota Twins signed reliever Jared Burton to a contract extension. The new deal covers 2013 and 2014 with a team option for 2015. The signing was first reported by Darren "Doogie" Wolfson of ESPN 1500 (via Twitter) and has now been confirmed by the Twins.
According to the Twins' press release, the deal is for two years, at $5.5 million. He will make $2.05 million in 2013 and $3.25 million in 2014. The option for 2015 is at $3.6 million with a $200,000 buyout.
Last week, the Twins tendered Burton a contract. This is the final year of arbitration-eligibility so the new contract will buy out one year of his free agency and the option year could buy out another.

It was the second big trade of the offseason for the Minnesota Twins, and the second concrete indicator to the league and to fans that General Manager Terry Ryan is looking beyond 2013. Indeed, it was the second time in which a trade likely made the Twins worse for the 2013, instead of better.
Which is odd, because this is a great trade. Ben Revere has plenty of value, but was not without question marks and could be replaceable as early as the second half of this year. The pitchers the Twins received in return, Vance Worley and Trevor May, are also not without question marks, but they’re exactly what the Twins needed to get – young, cheap pitching that can contribute in the majors.

The Minnesota Twins have traded CF Ben Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for RHP Vance Worley and a prospect. The prospect is Trevor May.
Revere was the heir apparent for the Twins Center Field job going back to when Denard Span was dealt to the Washington Nationals for RHP Alex Meyer. He will go to the Phillies where he and Span will compete (with BJ Upton) for NL East (CF) supremacy.
Vance Worley has spent parts of the past three seasons with the Phillies. Overall, he is 18-13 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He also has 238 strikeouts in 277.2 (7.7 K/9).

The Minnesota Twins might be looking back to the good old days wistfully for a reason other than wanting to relive their decade of glory. For instance, signing free agents used to be a relatively orderly business:
- Teams that needed a great pitcher would chase the best (or best remaining) pitcher, hoping to get him.
- One team would get him.
- Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

With the 4th overall pick in the 2012 Rule 5 draft, the Minnesota Twins drafted RHP Ryan Pressley from the Boston Red Sox organization.
John Manuel reports that he throws up to 95 mph. The 23-year-old split the 2012 season between Hi-A and AA. He posted a 6.28 ERA in 20 games in Hi-A. When promoted to AA, he posted a 2.93 ERA in 27.2 innings. He walked 10 and struckout 21. He apparently impressed in the Arizona Fall League.
The Twins did not lose any players in the MLB portion of the Rule 5 draft.

This morning at 9:00 a.m. the annual Rule 5 draft will begin. First will be the Major League portion. It will be followed by the minor league portion. The Twins have had some successes in each. The nabbed 3B Brian Buscher from the Giants in the minor league portion. In the major league portion, they have added names like Gary Wayne, who was a solid lefty reliever for the Minnesota Twins for a few seasons, including 1991. The most recent success was Scott Diamond.
Today, I want to write about one of the most underrated players in Minnesota Twins history. In my opinion, this player is the best player that the Twins have selected in the Rule 5 draft. ...

In an interview with reporters on Monday night at the Winter Meetings, Minnesota Twins General Manager Terry Ryan tamed expectations. When asked if the Twins will be competitive in 2013, he said, "We will try to have that happen... We have to be realistic on all fronts."
This most likely means that the Twins won't be handing out buckets of cash to front-line starting pitching but that could be expected from the start of the offseason. There could be some other deeper meanings that are going to transpire in the rest of this offseason or before the end of the year.

Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com reported via Twitter on Tuesday that the Twins have "checked in" on right-handed pitcher Shaun Marcum. This isn't really noteworthy, since Terry Ryan has already told reporters that he's been in contact with the agents for every free agent starter, but Marcum's name in particular is an interesting one.

Throughout the offseason, Terry Ryan has continued to say that he is looking for a third baseman to provide competition for Trevor Plouffe. He says that Plouffe will go into spring training as the Twins starting third baseman. However, as the Twins media contingent in Nashville last night met with the Twins GM, it became clear that he will bring in a quality third baseman, and maybe even this week.
As Nick wrote yesterday, when Terry Ryan says something over and over, it generally is true. Initial response by Twins fans (myself included) was that, with all of the Twins pitching needs and maybe needs in the middle infield, why would third base be such a focal point? ...

One of the more interesting times in every offseason is when the rhetoric goes away and the choices become, often painfully, clear. Rock, meet Hard Place.
The Hard Place is where the Twins are: fronting a rotation with Scott Diamond next year. Diamond, by Twins general manager Terry Ryan’s own analysis, is a #3 starter. He’s clearly scouring the winter meetings for upgrades. But like Charlie Brown at Halloween, all he’s getting is a whole lot of Rock.
