Now that he is a free agent, what would it cost to bring him in? Obviously there weren't a ton of teams willing to bring him in via trade, so maybe we could get him on a year year 9-10 mil deal where he tries to up his value and go for a multi year deal next off-season?

Thoughts? I'd prefer a 2 year 18 mil deal over 1/10, but either one would help this team.

I'm sure he'll sign a multi-year deal. Boy, this "free-agent" thing seems screwy. Let's see, any team could've had him for one-year and, say $12 million with an additional $3.5 coming over from L.A. So, yes, $8-10 x 2 would be comfortable. Otherwise, you could've traded for him and got him to sign another $12 mil extension ($24 total). But is he worth it. That is the question. I'm looking to see Baker sign quickly if he gets $8-10 over 2 years thrown his way. Give him a 3rd year option for $6-7 million and he is yours!

I would go 3 years with Haren for 35-40m with an option on the 4th. This season his numbers went the wrong way a little, but hopefully it isn't the start of a trend. That said, besides pitching 176 IP this season, he had 7 straight years over 200 IP. I see him as a guy entering the end of his career that can still pitch and would be a great guy to have around for Gibson, Diamond, Hendriks. In fact, Hendriks minor league line doesn't look much different than Haren's other than Haren figuring things out as a 23 yo and striking everyone out while Hendriks didn't strike people out but allowed much less hits. He might benefit the most.

There is absolutely no way Haren signs for less than 3 years and less than 10 million per year. He has an off year that he was injured and now everyone thinks he is due for a bargain contract? I wouldn't be surprised if he ends of getting a contract like 4 years for 60 mil. That's not what I would pay, but its possible someone really likes him. I'm a fan of him and think the Twins should go after him pretty hard. I think 1 high quality pitcher with the addition of Baker and Gibson would make the Twins rotation look pretty good.

No one will sign him for 4/60 when they could have had for 1/13-14 in a minor deal with the Angels.

I was disappointed that Ryan didn't make a trade for him.

Either he signs a 1/10 to get back on the market next year or someone takes a risk and signs him for 3/35

I'm hoping for Haren, Baker, and Marcum but my guess is we get Baker at best..

I think we had him for 4/52 in the Handbook, and that seems high given the last 24 hours. Like I said in the other thread about the Angels/Cubs deal, I still don't believe that the Angels were going to pay for Marmol AND the $3.5M. But still, it seems like just about any offer to take him for 1/13 shoudl have been accepted by the Angels. If nobody wanted to do that, why would anyone do 4/52?

When push comes to shove, I still wouldn't be suprised if some team looks at him and wonders why they didn't do that deal, as they pay close to that.

But assuming things are as they seem, it would appear his market is somewhere around 3/35? That seems crazy to me. I'd jump on that in an instant.

Haren is my top SP target this winter since Greinke and Sanchez will be signed for a lot. I put him at 2/24 with a vesting option in my offseason plan but I could see him getting signed for more.

The choice available to the Angels was deal Haren or cut him and pay 3.5 million. Haren's salary was not the sticking point for the Angels. They were not going to pay it in 2013. Any prospect for Haren had to be worth the money given to the club over the 3.5 million. I doubt there were decent offers. KC got cash for their prospect and received Santana. If the Angels gave KC more than $999,999 to KC it would be a bad deal for the Angels. Haren made 12. something million. Unless he thinks he was overpaid the further the contract is lower than that figure, the less years the contract would be. I think John is very correct on the 3/35 figure. If you wanted Haren for longer than 1 year you wouldn't trade for him because I don't think the agent would start significantly lower than the 15 million you just paid him.

Again, the sticking point to signing a Haren is...would he want to play here. That's the Twins biggest hurdle. You look at their 40-man roster, actually 32-man roster, and you barely see 25 servicable...servicable...players. Ugh!

Well if the Twins have interest, best to get a deal done quickly. If on the off chance the Rangers or another club steals Greinke away from the Angels with a mammoth offer, the Angels surely will reconsider Haren who already stated his preferance was to stay with them.

This is going to be his last big contract, so he would be smart to follow the money. Plus, if the Angels really wanted to keep him they would have already tried to extend him... and they didn't. Obviously they are going to try and keep Grienke with a big contract, not a bad move IMO. Haren does have a preference for warm places (was stated before the trade to LAA for ARZ), so it might not matter what the Twins are willing to give. I do remember reading something from a beat writer about the Twins trying very hard to get him before, but he wanted to go to LAA... can't think of the source off the top of my head.

John, we seem to be in agreement on the 3-35 range. If that is the case, I absolutely think the Twins jump on the opportunity. Unfortunately, I have a feeling there will be many other teams that feel the same way and the numbers will go higher.

I don't know what it will take, but for sure it will be more than the 2y/$18M or so the Twins used to re-sign Pavano... 3y/$35ish M is closer or something like 1/$10+3ish in incentives. He is probably on the top of the FA SP class right now (and I do like him more than Greinke.)

I got a question: How Much should a Team spend for each win by a Starting pitcher. It looks like premiere starters will e demanding $1 million a victory (12-20), The next rung is like $500,000 a win (8-12 wins). Supplemented by pre-arbitration and rookies ($100,000 a victory). So, if you win 90 games, do you spend $90 million on a rotation?

How much? Too much. The Twins are a last place team and Haren's interest in Minnesota will definately be less than other teams--the Twins would have to overpay like KC did with Gil Meche.

If the Angels passed on a 1/12 deal I wouldn't touch him except for a lower base and incentives. Damaged goods.

apperently haren likes to pitch in warm weather citys , so unless we over pay or unless he needs a few rounds of chemo dont look for him in the twin citys as 1 of our own any time soon

I don't have a problem giving him a contract, but your first part says a lot about how much he is going to make. A healthy Haren is not a bad deal at 12M. The angels obviously think he isn't worth that, and no one traded for him. The angels were on the hook for 3.5 M regardless, the Twins (or anyone else) could have given them an org filler guy for 3M and the right to exercise that option and the Angels would have come out ahead.

As such, I highly doubt he gets 4/52 or any sort of long term highly expensive deal. He's far more likely to do a 1/10 or something like that and then angle for a 3 year contract next winter.
