Great! I will miss Denard and will enjoy following his progress with the Nationals. Good trade? Gave up alot to get alot.

We'll find out if it was a good trade in about 5 years. My hope would be that Span is the difference-maker (along with letting Strasburg pitch in the playoffs) in making the Nationals a World Series champion in the next two years. I also hope that Meyer becomes a solid top-of-the-rotation starter by 2015 and the Twins are able to keep him for 7-8 years.

Good article.
Good trade, but I'll miss him. A friend told me they used to frequently see him chilling by himself at Old Chicago on Hennepin in Uptown. Combined with that always stoic look, that's how I'll remember him. Sad to see the CF torch passed again, hopefully the next bearer can fill the shoes.

I was there with my now-wife for Span's first career home run, a rocket off of Mark Buerhle that I believe went into the press box. No one saw it coming and he just go ahold of one. He was a class act the whole way in my opinion and I hope he does awesome with the Nats. Love that triple against the chi sox in '08 also.
Seth, please tell me, is Meyer better to have than Randall Delgado? Thanks.

Sad to see Denard leave, but hopeful Meyer makes it worthwhile.
Classy player, easy to cheer for.

Great opportunity for Span. What a solid team Mike Rizzo has assembled.

The trade is certainly understandable and inevitable but still sad to see Span leave the Twins. You can tell he has a lot of respect from his teammates - good to read that and thanks for posting this. Nationals are my second favorite team so I am glad he is going there. Hope they make it to the World Series next year.

Well done, Seth. For us fans, this is the bittersweet part of the business. Here's to both Span and Meyer excelling with their new teams.

Great story. thanks for sharing.
As for Meyer versus Delgado... I'm not certain, but my generic thought would be that Meyer has a little higher ceiling, but Delgado is big league ready. Both throw hard. If Meyer does have four pitches and all turns out well, I think this will be a great move for the Twins. I would have been fine with either, of course.

Best Span moment: 9/25/08 game tying triple off Jenks.
It's a shame we didn't win the division that season but that was one of the top moments of the decade for the Twins.

Great article. Should have been a way to keep him, but at least for him he is going to an organization that, aside from the Strassburg debacle, appears to care about winning. That team is loaded.
