Bullets Dodged?
Joe Blanton to sign with the Angels and Jeff Francis to sign with the Rockies.

I could have lived with Blanton as an affordable piece if he was paired with one of Marcum, McCarthy or Dempster. As one poster pointed out a few days ago, his FIP and xFIP belied his headline numbers this past couple of seasons.

Agreed, but 2/$15 is a little more than he is probably worth. Problem is TR is going to end up without a chair when the music stops if he isn't willing to overpay a little. There are still a large number of FA pitchers out there, but it sure seems as though TR is just waiting for guys like Edwin Jackson last year who get desperate and sign a favorable deal. You don't end up with the guys you necessarily want in that scenario. Maybe TR thinks they are all a dime a dozen and doesn't care who he ends up with as long as he can get three guys.

Yeah we are so lucky to miss out on Blanton. He would easily better than anyone currently in the starting rotation. They still need to sign 3 starters and there are not too many decent pitchers out there to choose from. And to make matters worse, it's not like the Twins have many trade chips to work with to pull off a deal.
2014 will be a better year...

I"m not going to cry and bitter tears over Blanton. It's possible he would be a lot better if his home field was Target Field than The Bank, but for $7.5M/year, I'm not anxious to risk it.
So Jeff Francis is going back to Colorado? Is he a masochist? Why does he keep going back to that launching pad? I'm not a huge fan of his, but I'd have loved to see him sign a one-year deal for cheap provided the Twins had an option year. I'd be intrigued to see what he could do in a pitcher-friendly ballpark.

Ryan needs to understand the market has changed.
He needs to pay the market price for a decent pitcher. If he refuses to do this and fans continue pat his back by saying "that guy is too expensive" its time to trade Mauer because they aren't going to compete for at least 2-3 years due to their lack of pitching.

Not a huge Blanton fan but his respectable K/9 rate means fewer chances for the likely poor Twins defense to make a mistake. To me he's a better fit than "better" pitchers like Saunders and McCarthy. I could care less about ERA as unearned runs count just the same and the Twins defense is certainly going to provide a guy like Saunders plenty of those.

I was indifferent on those 2 if we signed one as the number 5. I really hope someone outbids TR for Lannan, he would not improve our staff much at all.
I really hope we push hard for Edwin Jackson and Marcum. Best "cheaper" options available and would probably be 1-2 in our rotation.

Bullet dodged, definitely wasn't ultra-excited about Blanton. Granted fantasy baseball hardly applies, but he falls in that waiver-wire group where you just think 'Fine, whatever, just try not to lose.'
