Returning pitchers from last year?
So, I know our staff taken as a whole, pretty much sucked the last two years. All the reports I hear make it sound like we're pretty much replacing everyone except Diamond, Duensing, Burton, and Perkins.
Let's not forget though, that we did have other pitchers that had moments of quality last year.
Casey Fien had the 2nd best WHIP and best ERA on the staff.
Tyler Robertson had one of the best SO/9 ratios, and looked strong as a LOOGY
Deduno, Walters, and De Vries all had moments where they looked like they could be quite capable #5 starters
With our new bullpen coach, I wouldn't be surprised to see one or more of these guys get the polish and playing time they need to be solid pieces of our staff. Maybe Cuellar can even help coax a decent performance out of Hendriks or Blackburn (if he turns Blackburn's career around, he should get an enormous bonus)
Thoughts?

Fien was quite impressive, and I'd love to see him replicate his performance. My thoughts on Hendriks are in another thread, but suffice it to say I believe he'll become a good pitcher. Tyler Robertson is more of a riddle; I'm not sure he'll end up that effective, but I hope he does. I have heavy doubts about all three of Deduno, DeVries, and Walters, and if they're anything other than callups due to injury or something, then I think the Twins will find themselves on the losing end of lots of games.

I want Joe Saunders added to this staff. Two years and $15 million sounds about right. Somebody is bound to get hurt out of Diamond, Saunders, Pelfrey, Worley and Correia.
So Hendricks, Gibson, May and Meyer will get their shot eventually We have very few quality lefty starters outside of Diamond in this organization. I would rather have too many starters then not enough.

I'm all for Casey Fien. He pitched really well last year. I like Robertson too because he can get some Ks.
We should keep Walters, Deduno, and De Vries in AAA in case someone gets hurt.

I pick Fien as a surprise guy, should Burton falter or suffer injury. He impressed the heck out of me last year, just hope it wasn't a mirage.
Robertson should be strictly a LOOGY.
If Cuellar gets decent performances out of Hendriks AND Blackburn, he should get more than just a well-deserved bonus. He better get all the credit and the managerial position. Has anyone pointed out how dominant Hendriks and to a lesser extent, Blackburn were after their demotions to Roc.? They both could have jumped off a cliff or gone postal, but they appeared to go about their business in the right way after their career setbacks- Cuellar has to get some of the credit already, just for keeping them viable options.Last edited by jokin; 02-04-2013 at 12:12 AM.
