Thread: BoSox - Twins trade proposal

I'm just tossing an idea out there, but would anyone else be willing to do this trade?....

BoSox get: Byron Buxton, Travis Harrison, Daniel Santana

Twins get: Xander Bogaerts

Not with the add-ins. Straight up maybe, but I would still lean no.

Can't do that right now...not for another few months. I do like the idea of getting Bogaerts, but I don't think he's going anywhere. Boston plays shortstop roulette as much as we do...

Minor league only trades almost never happen. Now, Mauer and someone not named Buxton might work....

Could be a trade neither team would go for.

From Boston's perspective, Bogaerts looks like a sure thing, while Buxton will become one only after another good year. Harrison has potential but there are questions about his glove, while Santana is a 40-man roster issue because he was signed so young and looks not close to ready yet.

From the Twins' perspective, being in rebuilding mode, Bogaerts would be huge at SS, but if all three of their current players develop according to plan then the team is probably stronger in 2016 by keeping them all.

As always, it comes down to first-hand talent evaluation so Terry Ryan and his scouts hold all the cards over an armchair-GM like me; if they see ceilings on Harrison and Santana that will limit their major-league usefulness, then it's close to just Buxton for Bogaerts and probably they'd go for it. My take is that this wouldn't happen.

It's an interesting idea but I think Bogarts is untouchable. I wonder if a team like the Rangers might trade a (mostly) known quality like Mike Olt, who is blocked at third, for a high upside guy who can't possibly help them this year. I would think not

Yes....the SS is more likely to succeed, because he has shown it at a higher level. Also, MIF are much harder to find.

I think the Twins, who do a great job scouting outside of the U.S., just need to head a little farther south down to Curacao... and find these gems when they're 16. The middle infielders to come off of that island in the last 5 years have been impressive.

Does heavy reliance on this pipeline sow the seeds of 40-man roster trouble down the road? I already commented about that in regard to Santana. Maybe you are just proposing a little more of this, like one or two. If you have to hang onto a dozen young players on whom the jury remains out, because you signed about four of them every year for several years, then it doesn't seem sustainable.

To my knowledge, not a single player in the system was signed by the Twins out of Curacao. I would just like to see signs of some activity, a single guy some year. The Dutch team has had some success in the WBC mostly due to their Curacao guys.

Two of the Top 10 prospects in baseball - Profar and Bogaerts - were discovered there.

I think Shairon Martis is the lone Twin player from Curacao.

Jeremy, don't you think the new caps on spending evens the playing field significantly? And do you believe we're already seeing a change with the Twins, or not? Minier and Silva were signed by the Twins, both top 25 international prospects, right?

After watching Peletero, one is left with the impression that the prospect pipeline can be controlled by a handful of influence peddlers. Maybe the Twins just couldn't find a way to establish a Curacao beachhead.

Heck, why stop at Curacao? There are prospects in every corner of the globe

This is one area the Twins can't be criticized. They have players from everywhere - including the most total players in the WBC.

I might do that (not withstanding the obvious problem of trading Buxton right now). Fits well with the 2014 theme... Might be a tad too much to give up though.

Is Bogaerts blocked in Boston?

Bogaerts is definitely not blocked in Boston.

Including Butera...playing for Italy...and we got him through a trade and the Mets didn't get him from Italy, he was drafted :-) Like Morny, who we drafted...

Just because they play in the WBC for another country, doesn't mean they were international signings where combing the globe took place...

I think that's the goal, but I doubt the international market becomes any less corrupt. The Twins do a great job, don't get me wrong. I would consider them leaders in Australia and strong in Europe. They've also had a presence in both Venezuela and the Dominican. Next year they'll have a larger pool, so that will be interesting.

I don't know what a team would have to surrender for Xander Bogaerts, but I have to beleive it would be a lot.
Methinks even Buxton (could we trade him now) does not look like the sure thing Bogaerts looks like.
And a SS like that is what everyone but the Rockies are looking for.
