Angels Close to Signing Joe Blanton
Angels Close To Signing Joe Blanton
By Tim Dierkes [December 5 at 6:30pm CST]
The Angels are close to signing starter Joe Blanton to a one-year deal, according to tweets from Joe McDonnell of FOX Sports and Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times.
Blanton, 31, posted a 4.71 ERA, 7.8 K/9, 1.6 BB/9, 1.37 HR/9, and 44.6% groundball rate in 191 innings for the Phillies and Dodgers this year. The near-signing raises the question as to whether the Angels' rotation is set, with Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Tommy Hanson, Blanton, and Garrett Richards, and without Zack Greinke.
Happy about this. I did not want him in a Twins Uni.

I wouldn't want him in a multiyear.
Signing him to a one year and flipping him in July would be OK.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com hears that Joe Blanton's deal with the Angels is for two years and $15 million.
Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register says the deal also includes a team option for a third season. Previous reports said that the pact was only for one year, but apparently that's not the case. Blanton posted a 4.71 ERA in 2012 for the Phillies and Dodgers, which was his lowest mark in three years. It's possible that the Angels could still be in the hunt for another starter even after acquiring Blanton and Tommy Hanson, but this should effectively rule them out for Zack Greinke.

It was a relatively slow day in the world of Twins Baseball with only two of the five ball clubs active. Though that didn't prevent us from hearing some pretty newsworthy things. Twins first...
