You are correct. I jumped the gun. I believe they have 10 days to do something with him after being DFA'd (7 days before they have to put him on waivers).

It doesn't really matter if Opening Day is a National Holiday unless they make it a Mandatory Holiday. Companies don't have to honor/acknowledge most Holidays anyway.

At the time our 40-man roster was full. So by signing him to a minor league contract even though he was guaranteed to make the roster it gave them several months to open up a spot for him.

Because the 40 man roster is/was full. By agreeing to a minor league contract, and a gentlman's agreement, it allows the team time to make room for him.
You are correct about the waiver process. But Hendricks has an option left so they can send him to AAA. He will only have to pass through waivers again if the Cubs need a spot on the 40-man roster...
