The days are beginning to get noticeably longer. Football teams are being eliminated from the playoffs one-by-one. The Minnesota Twins Caravan is winding down. So it must be almost time for TwinsFest.

I know many fans enjoy going to TwinsFest yearly. Those folks already already know what they want to do. But, if you haven't been in a while, allow me to point out some of my TwinsFest traditions.

Stability at third base and right-handed power have both been in short supply for the Twins over the past decade or so. Trevor Plouffe has developed into one of the team’s most interesting commodities because he has the potential to fill both needs, and could do so at a relatively low cost for the next several years.

As a homegrown talent, Plouffe is precisely the type of player the Twins want to structure their rebuild around, but clearly they still hold reservations about him. ...

Less than a month for Pitchers and Catchers to report to Fort Myers so it is about time for you to make your arrangements to see your Minnesota Twins. That means it's time for the second annual Fort Myers Guides.

This season there will be three guides and will be different than last year's. I now go to the Central and South Central Florida area multiple times per month, so I have a list of additional tips. This will be the first guide: The Spring Training Logistics Guide, where the area is described and the best and least expensive ways of getting to the Twins' Spring Training home are explained.

There have been plenty of great players in the history of the Twins franchise and there have also been plenty of duds. In my on-going offseason series, I have been taking a look at some of the worst players to ever wear a Twins uniform. In previous posts, the series covered Butch Huskey and Terry Felton.

Next on the list of all-time worst, Mr. Scott Klingenbeck...

    ----------

The Baltimore Orioles drafted Scott Klingenbeck in the fifth round of the 1992 amateur draft. His college experience helped him travel quickly through their farm system. ...

There is little debate over the fact that the Twins' moves this offseason haven't done much to help ensure significant improvement in 2013. This club appears to have its sights set fully on a target somewhere further down the line. Among fans and media, there seems to be a split between people who question this approach and those who accept it.

Whatever your feelings on the matter, it's important to be realistic about the timeline for building a contending team around players that are currently in Double-A (or lower). It's also important to remain cognizant of the organization's outlook going forward.

Do you have plans to get away from the cold and snow and feel the sand between your toes, the sun on your back, and hopefully catch some Twins spring training baseball in Florida? What better way to forget your problems and get away from it all? Well, if you are going, you might want to raise your credit card limit and keep a tight grip on your wallet or purse, because MLB is looking to help themselves to your money. Even the Twins, who aren't raising spring training ticket prices this year have found a loophole.

    It's part of a trend.

Earlier last week, I looked at the Minnesota Twins possible candidates for the leadoff hitter role in 2013. With Denard Span and Ben Revere traded to the National League, there is some question about who will step up and earn the leadoff spot out of spring training. Aaron Hicks looks like the leadoff hitter of the future but that doesn't mean that he will start the year in Minnesota. This could leave a big hole in the first spot in the batting order.

One candidate I discussed was catcher Joe Mauer. ...
Justin Morneau looks to bounce back

Justin Morneau presents a paradox for the 2013 Twins. If the club is truly in full rebuild mode and is more interested in saving money than taking financial risks in a meaningful effort to compete -- as appears to be the case -- then why hang on to an expensive veteran with one year left on his contract? Surely some team out there would be willing to take on Morneau, although there probably wouldn't be much of a return in the swap.

The answer, I believe, is that the Twins still view Morneau as a star-caliber core player -- albeit one who's been heavily burdened by injuries over the past couple years. ...

On Thursday, the 2013 World Baseball Classic rosters were announced. The day began with MLB Network unveiling Team USA. In the afternoon, the rosters of the other participating countries were announced. Three years ago, Tom Stuifbergen became a household name for the team from The Netherlands when he, under the tutelage of Bert Blyleven, threw five shutout innings against the vaunted lineup of the Dominican Republic. He and several other Twins players (past, present and future) will be participating in this year’s tournament/exhibition. Before getting to those Twins related players, here is a rundown of where the games are taking place and which teams are involved.

Something has been bothering me over the last couple of days.Oddly, it has nothing to do with shrinking payroll or lack of top-of-the-rotation starters.

It has to do with the quantity of pitchers the Twins are bringing to camp. Though the Twins are bringing a franchise-record 34 pitchers to Major League Spring Training, it may be they are not bringing enough.

In 2010 and 2011, when the bulk of the staff was set, the Twins invited 24 and 26 pitchers to camp, respectively. Last year, coming off their first 90-plus loss season, the Twins invited 33. We could argue about the quality of ...

In less than four weeks, a sizable contingent of pitchers will report to Ft. Myers for spring training, with eyes on claiming a spot in Minnesota's rebuilt rotation. Rarely has it been so unclear at this point in the offseason who would comprise this vital unit.

We can safely assume that, barring injury, three of the five spots will be occupied by Scott Diamond, Vance Worley and Kevin Correia. Beyond them, the situation becomes much murkier.

The major league baseball season is a real grind. There are 162 games in about 185 days (give or take) and that includes travel time, not to mention spring training and the postseason. It's a marathon. Players need to keep chugging along, working through illness and injury while they strive for peak performance. Ability is critical, but if a team isn't durable, it's headed for a long season.

Everyone knows that Baltimore Orioles Cal Ripken Jr. holds the major league record for consecutive games played with 2,632. But what is the Minnesota Twins record for most consecutive games played and who holds the record? The Twins record for consecutive games played stands at 319, less than two full season. You may be surprised to learn that the record holder is still playing for the Twins today. ...

31 years ago today, January 12, 1981, the Minnesota Twins made a decision that altered the history of the organization. On that date, the Twins used the third overall pick in the January portion of the MLB Draft.

As you know, in June, players out of high school, junior college and those having finished three years at a four-year college are selected. However, from 1965 through 1986, there was also a draft in January for high school and college players who graduated in the Winter. Kirby Puckett fit into that category.
