The Minnesota Twins have traded third baseman Danny Valencia to the Boston Red Sox for minor league outfielder Jeremias Pineda. Valencia, who started the year as the Twins everyday third baseman, has spent most of the year in Rochester but was recalled two weeks ago when Trevor Plouffe was injured. He was hitting .198 with a 522 OPS and also struggled in AAA, hitting .250 with a 688 OPS. Replacing Valencia on the 25-man roster will be Tsuyoshi Nishioka.

Next Sunday, the 12th, Twins pitcher Glen Perkins and his wife Alisha are organizing a 5K in downtown Minneapolis to raise money for the fight against cyctis fibrosis (CF). It's the first Friday in August and that means the trade deadline came and passed in the last week. There was plenty of speculation that the Twins might be in the midst of a fire sale with the team on pace for their second straight 90-loss. Denard Span, Josh Willingham, and Justin Morneau were some of the players that other teams asked the Twins about but all of these players are still with the organization. Francisco Liriano was the only player to find himself wearing a different jersey over the course of the last few days. Many fans were disappointed with the players that the Twins got in return for Liriano and it is hard to think that the Twins turned the franchise around with this lone trade.
On the field, the Twins have been in the midst of a very good stretch of baseball with the team winning five of their six games since last Friday. ...

Tuesday's 3:00 PM trade deadline came and went with Minnesota, for a second consecutive year, standing pat.
There's a lot of frustration being directed toward the Twins, who – unlike other cellar-dwellers around the league – weren't able to unload assets for impact prospects. Their only trade sent Francisco Liriano to the White Sox for a meager return. In short, the franchise did very little to aid its rebuilding effort.
But, in reflecting on these past days, there's one very important point to keep in mind: no trade is better than a bad trade.

Today is the July trade deadline. At 3:00 this afternoon (central time), the non-waiver trade deadline will come and go. The Twins have already traded Francisco Liriano. That was a given. The Twins needed to deal him before July 31 regardless of the 10 (or more) things that we hate about the actual deal itself.

When the news came down this weekend that the Twins had traded Francisco Liriano to the White Sox for a pair of middling 23-year-old prospects, the reaction around here was understandably negative. The same questions echoed in the minds of fans across the state.
Why did the Twins deal Liriano in the wake of his worst start of the season?
Why did they back away from their stated goal of adding young, high-upside talent?
And why – WHY – did they send a potential difference-maker to the one team that almost no Twins fan wants to see hoisting a trophy in October?

I started making a list of the top 10 things I hate about this trade for today’s Gleeman and the Geek podcast. I’m up to #28.

1. I hate that after waiting out the market so Liriano was the best remaining rental, the Twins traded him after his one terrible start in the last two months and less than 24 hours before a possible redeeming start.
2. I hate that what the Twins got in return is SO much worse than what other rental pitchers brought back.

The Minnesota Twins traded Francisco Liriano to the White Sox tonight for infielder Eduardo Escobar and left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez. Liriano was scheduled to start Sunday's game versus the Cleveland Indians. Brian Duensing will take his turn in the rotation.
Neither prospect the Twins received is highly, or even semi-highly, regarded. Escobar was not in Baseball America's list of the White Sox top 10 prospects prior to the season. He was #7 on Baseball Prospectus' list, but is listed as a 2-star (out of five) prospect.

It was a rough week for the Twins in Chicago as the team got swept by one of their biggest rivals in a three game set. Minnesota won't have to wait long to get another shot at the White Sox as Chicago will come to Minnesota at the beginning of next week. For now, the focus of the club will turn to the Cleveland Indians over the weekend, a series where the Twins could play spoiler to a team trying to get back into the division race.
Even with the team playing some important games over the course of the next week, the focus of many fans will be on the trade deadline on Tuesday afternoon. ...

Anthony Swarzak went on the 15 day DL with a rotator cuff strain, and Carl Pavano moved to the 60 Day DL to make room for our beloved Adopt-A-Prospect. For those who don't know: Luis Perdomo is a relief pitcher who spent a brief while with the San Diego Padres and a briefer time with the New Britain Rock Cats, and the briefest time yet with Rochester.
But more to the point Luis Perdomo is a man with a beard, and not just any beard, a beard that bests the scruffiest climbers of Mount Everest, a beard that the Visagoth's themselves envy, a beard that has prepared him to enter the long line of Jeff Reardon and Rick Aguilera as a Neckwarmer Nightmare Reliever!

Since the start of the 2011 season, the Twins have a recordof103-157. Only the Houston Astros have a worse record in that time (90-170).As the trade deadline approaches, it is striking how active the Astros have been in making trades while the Twins have been pretty quiet to this point.
Since the beginning of July 2011, the Twins have made the following moves:

Two big pitching trades have been made this week and several more have been close. With all that activity, could it be that Terry Ryan has missed his chance to maximize his return on Francisco Liriano?
I don’t think so, but I also doubt we’ll see a move soon.
Still Lots Of Interest
The Tigers acquired Anibal Sanchez on Monday and the Pirates traded for Wandy Rodriguez on Tuesday. Both are top notch pitchers that could be viewed as comparable (or better) than Liriano. Furthermore, yesterday Dan Gladden revealed that the Twins had long talks with the Pirates before they walked away and the Pirates worked out a deal with Houston for Rodriguez. ...

The Big Picture
San Francisco leads Los Angeles by a game and a half for the NL West lead. As is typically the case, the G-Men have excelled on the mound, ranking fourth in the NL in ERA, while struggling on offense, ranking 11th in runs per game.
The Dodgers have proven pesky and the Diamondbacks – currently six games back – are always a threat to make a late-season run (last year they went 45-25 after the break), so one would have to think the Giants are very interested in making a move.
