for closers, basically one-inning specialists, I think the common stats work pretty good. Saves, opportunities, innings, ERA/Whip, K.

Perkins doesn't have a lot of years as a closer but he looks pretty good so far to me.

I am not sure that Perkins is as "elite" as some are saying here (his rise in K rate has come at a time when the league K rate has risen too), but he's pretty good, and a 2/16 extension isn't paying him like an elite guy anyway.

Also, getting him on a 2/16 extension now might be a better move than waiting a couple years, and having to do something like 4/32 or worse. The Joe Nathan extension was pretty bad, and I'm glad this basically means that won't happen again, at least not for another 5 years.

Yeah, it looks like a good deal to me too. There's a good chance they'd go too long and/or too much if they waited another year to extend. That or else lose him just as the Twins finally become competitive again and then be forced to audition middle relievers in the closer role while trying to win the division or worse, end up making a trade like the one for the guy whose name rhymed with Cat Naps.

That being said, possibly the best part of the deal is that it could substantially increase his trade value should the Twins decide to move him if, by mid-season next year, it appears the rebuild will continue into 2016.

Teams looking for a reliever at the deadline want players at the end of their contract. The teams can fill that need in the off season without giving up major prospects. This extension actually hurts the Twins chances of trading Perkins.

Time will tell but many people here are making the huge assumption that Perk will be a good closer for the next 4 years. If we look back to 2010 the "elite closers" that year were Brian Wilson, Heath Bell, Rafael Soriano, Joakim Soria, and Rivera. That's 3 guys that got injured and missed full seasons and 2 that just fell apart.

2009 elite were: Nathan, Rivera, Francisco Cordero, Jonathan Papelbon, Ryan Franklin,, Trevor Hoffman, Jonathan Broxton, and Andrew Bailey. That's 3 guys with significant injuries and 3 guys that fell apart.

I won't look back any further but those aren't promising results.

If he's still playing, the Mets and Yanks are welcome to him
