    Hartman: Gardy praises Hicks, too.

In Sid Hartman's latest column at StarTribune.com, he points out that Ron Gardenhire does understand some of the things that Aaron Hicks is doing well, despite the criticism earlier this week:

Gardenhire and Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony told Hicks he needed to prepare better for each game and study the opposing pitchers more, but after the game Gardenhire pointed out that while Hicks’ average has remained low, he still is doing a lot of good things for the ballclub, including his defensive work in center field and showing patience at the plate.
We tend to react to Gardenhire's criticism of players, but I think one reason that stands out is because he's pretty careful about doing so publicly. I'm pretty down on Hicks right now, but it's nice to see that Gardy sees some of the positives along with some of the negatives. (Not that he has much choice.)

Is he? I genuinely don't know, relative to other major league managers. My impression is that he doesn't go out of his way to rip players, but he's pretty willing to do so in the apparent name of providing a balanced view.

If I recall, Gardy had a talk with Morneau in 2006 and called him out publicly. Justin took things to heart and cites that adventure as the motivation to his moving on and eventually winning the MVP that season. We can only hope that Hicks takes this period to heart and turns his major league career around.

You've never liked Hicks, have ya? Is it because he doesn't have enough grit? Not bustin' his tail enough? Just not gettin' after it?

I'm OK with Gardy's comments about Hicks. I dont think he crossed a line. It was Antony who went overboard with his comments.
