Twins Prospects give Peoria a nice win - 10/11/12
The Twins prospects had quite the day in the AFL today...
Kyle Gibson started and threw five shutout innings. He gave up four hits, walked none and struckout 8!
Michael Tonkin then threw a scoreless inning. He gave up one hit, walked none and struckout 1.
Logan Darnell threw two shutout innings. He gave up one hit, walked two and struckout 1.
Caleb Thielbar threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Four Twins minor league pitchers combine for a shutout in Peoria's 6-0 win over Phoenix.
Also, Nate Roberts started in LF and batted eighth. He was 2-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

Roberts also had a SB. Shocking that he didn't get a HBP
.
The big news, though is Gibson. Seth, I was impressed in your interview with Gibson and his patient approach to recovery during his rehab. Have you seen him enough before and after his TJ to make an educated guess if he's close to pre-injury form and if he's likely to be on the 2013 opening day roster? Today has to be huge shot in the arm for his chances.Last edited by jokin; 10-11-2012 at 06:06 PM.

I hope he makes it impossible for MN to start him in AAA next yr.....make his 175IP in 2013 all count in the majors.

Just for perspective - if the Twins "limit" Gibson to 175 innings, that would be 2 more innings than the Twins 2012 innings leader, Scott Diamond. For more perspective: Second place in IP goes to Brian Duensing, with 109, Liriano was the only other pitcher to hit 100 innings.

Completely get where you're coming from but.....Gibby's total is gonna be his combined number as I believe MN will mistakenly start him in AAA for April/May (which means its possible Gardy never see's him in June).
Diamond did do 207 combined innings, Hendriks 191IP and DeVries 157.2....all career highs.
Those 2 really show what a joke Rick Anderson has become....he wasnt able to identify Diamond in ST as he was in first cuts & DeVries was their best pitcher in 2nd half, but Andy let Mn send him back down after his first few starts. He also was in the group that kept telling Scot Baker to 'suck it up' & 'let it loose' when he had a torn UCL.Last edited by greengoblinrulz; 10-11-2012 at 10:34 PM.

Everyone should follow the link and go look at the pitch-by-pitch selection for all the pitchers. I thought Gibson was especially impressive in that he established his fastball early and was able to get a lot of strikeouts late off his slider and changeup. I was impressed that his fastball, which started out 93-95, and even though it was down to 91 in the later innings he could still reach 93 when needed. The gun seemed kinda fast when Darnell was hitting 92, but Tonkin was just at 94-95, so he was still throwing pretty hard. Gibson did a great job of attacking the strike-zone, and he really exploited the outside (generously called) corner of the plate vs. lefties. The only down side was that Gibson threw a lot of pitches, but overall he maintained ~15 pitches/inning, which is pretty normal. It will be really exciting if he can build arm strength and maintain his velocity through all 5 innings.
